Default I think it'* my fuel pump....can I get some opinions?

Just recently, about 2 weeks ago, my car started to act funny as in it would all of a sudden lose power and stumble. Giving it gas wouldn't help, it wouldn't rev and it would want to stall. The SES would come on and the TRACTION OFF light would come on. Most of the time it would sort of clear itself up and run OK. Previously it would run great. Sometimes it would just not have any power, even flooring it and I would have to ease it up to speed. Other times it would peel the tires.

I don't think it'* an ignition related problem cause I don't feel it misfiring like my old Grand Prix ( a new set of wires cured that). I installed new plugs (NGK TR55) and no new wires yet but I will. I have not checked the coils yet either but I will. So why do I think it'* the fuel pump? I went and bought a FI pressure tester and at startup and idle it was 34 psi, up to 40ish at first turn of the key. It went to as low as 31psi. Giving it gas didn't change it much. I just changed the fuel filter and it was dirty as heck (I cut it open and it was filthy and brown fuel came out). After reading countless and extremely informative posts, it seems like the combination of dirty fuel filter, 159000 miles, and an overworked pump from the filter is slowly killing it. Anybody else think it'* the fuel pump? Any more info needed? Anyone else like the smell of unleaded too?

Default

I have a 96 ssei and had some of the same issues and it was indeed the fuel pump internally coming apart,, it would work great at times and then crap out on me around corners uphill and wot. I put the fuel gauge on then taped it to my windshield while driving ( as safely as possible ) and saw when the car was stalling and doing what you were explaining the fuel pressure would drop to almost zero im sure someone with more experience will chime in shortly ( i dont know about the 94 but the 96 also has a fuel pump control module and a two speed pump)
