Default problems with brakes

I've gone through these posts inside and out trying to find out anything to help but i'm still not so sure.
I'm totally new to cars (and this board) and have been having trouble with my brakes.
They are extremely hard to press and when I do finally get it stopped the car idles really rough also stalling at times.
Everyone i've talked to has said it was the booster, but i've also read the vacuum lines.
Any ideas?

you can check the large (approx 5/8in) vac line going from the intake, to the booster. there is a check valve that fails, but those usually dont fail closed. they fail open.
