The SLO's exhaust work & rearview mirror - no 56k
29 Attachment(s)
I bought used exhaust tips from someone on ClubGP:
Attachment 28955 I'm not sure how stock they are or which car had them, but I can tell they have been sandblasted, and there are pipes in the back welded at odd angles. They look really nice, and when they're up against the bumper, they conform to the shape very well. Attachment 28956 Attachment 28957 In this picture, they're just hanging. They look odd when low, but they are nice when they are up a bit. Attachment 28958 And now, the rearview mirror! This is awesome, and it makes driving safely almost breezy. Attachment 28959 Attachment 28960 Attachment 28961 I tried to do one of those really cool, unscientific experiments. I sprayed 500º F engine aerosol paint onto some exhaust pipe to see how it would hold up. After some undocumented amount of miles, the primer gray turned to a slight tan. I'm not sure what that means. So, lesson learned: Don't use engine paint on the exhaust pipes. Attachment 28962 Also, I got a Cherry Bomb resonator. It has a more porous inside than the OE resonator that I had before, and it's about 2" longer. This is the longest Cherry Bomb I could find, and I paid about $20 for it at Advance Auto Parts. Yet another unscientific test relatively confirms that with this resonator, my exhaust is even quieter than before. This test was actually done after I ran for almost a whole 24 hour period with just the resonator and no muffler. I put on about 180 highway miles with drone. People kept trying to get out of the way, and it was so awesome to be able to drive straight without changing lanes or tailgating slow drivers. I'm a horrible person... Attachment 28963 Attachment 28964 To illuminate my work area, I used a 48" fluorescent lamp. It was nice! Attachment 28965 I put in a 3" Hogan downpipe. It has two new gaskets, for both sides, and one is very shiny. Worthy of a picture, I think. Attachment 28966 See all the PB Blaster stuff on the ground? I spent about 6 hours struggling with nuts and rods and also clamping on the resonator. The clamping wasn't hard, but it was done during these six hours. Anyway, the nuts on the exhaust manifold's rods that hold on the downpipe were so stuck that I broke loose the rods trying to get simply the nuts to move. It was an awesome experience working for 6 hours in the night and trying to loosen two nuts. Lots of fun. Attachment 28967 Attachment 28968 So, after my ricing experience with just a resonator after a 3" downpipe, I had my welding friend come over. There's an OE rod welded onto the exhaust, and it apparently provides some structural integrity. I had to move it because of the added resonator length. Attachment 28969 You can here see the primer-turned-tan color: Attachment 28970 Attachment 28971 And some more pictures now: Attachment 28972 Attachment 28973 Attachment 28974 Attachment 28975 Attachment 28976 Attachment 28977 Attachment 28978 Attachment 28979 Look at this smoke! Attachment 28980 More unscientific experimentation: A new way to hold on an exhaust tip so that it doesn't move during welding. Attachment 28981 Attachment 28982 Attachment 28983 |
Very nice! Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you have maybe a video you can share on how your exhaust sounds?
|
They look good on the car, And unique. Hit the inside of them with BBQ black. LOL
|
I just need a few days of driving, and the inside will be completely black all by itself. :D
As for a video, my video recording camera has a broken lens, so I can only get sound. I'll do that probably today or tomorrow. There's some nice bass, but it's very quiet. |
I bet it is a "quiet" bass rumble with the cherry bomb as a resonator. You should have used them for the mufflers too! Triple VaaaaRooooom!!!
|
I was considering it, but I figured I could keep running with the OE muffler, get headers, and then approximate a good location for a cutout. The cutout could get me that crazy sound on demand, but I could go back to something sane shortly after.
|
Ya, I've been toying with the exhaust cutouts for some time, here's an awesome one, electrically actuated.
QTP » Electric Exhaust Cutouts Next link has a soound clip. It's pretty awesome. Bet the NorthStar would really growl. QTP » Electric Exhaust Cutouts http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/...s/QTECTREO.jpg |

I have been considering an electronically controlled one. I can right now get one and later attach the motor, so it would until then be just a plate I have to remove manually. Seems like a good idea for drag racing nights at the local track.
I've got more pictures! They're right after a car wash, so the car is still wet. Not the best, but I was running out of sun light. Attachment 28949 Attachment 28950 Attachment 28951 I did a crazy mod! Not yet polished, but it's getting there. I tinted the tail lights, and then I covered that with clear coat with metallic flakes. It looks nice, but really badly needs a polish. Probably tomorrow or so. Attachment 28952 Attachment 28953 Attachment 28954 |
For someone who WillWren says is all talk, Your sure been a busy man, maybe somebody ought to sneak over htere and post a thread. Heheheeeeeeeee.
