Snowmobile Problems
 

Does anybody know much about snowmobiles? Went out to start them today and 1 of the 3 are working right. The Artic Cat is going in again because it wont start and it leaks a S%^$ load of gas, the Polaris has its first problem ever though. Started it and one of the vent tubes was leaking gas. It was coming out by the handle bars. Does this mean that the carburetor is gummed up and needs to be cleaned? Want to get out Saturday but if it doesnt stop doing this we cant. But suprisingly it started on the second pull. Which after 2 years is insanely good. Also the SkiDoo started easily for the first time ever. It had no problems. But if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated I would like to fix this myself though if I can. Dont even ask about the Artic Cat it is just a piece of S$#@. Hasnt run right since the day we bought it.

I cant really see why a gummed carb would cause a leak in the vent tube. I would think theres a clog, or kink in a line somewhere.

check all your lines for any problems (kinks, cracks, clogs, ect..) also you can shut the gas off (if there's a shut off on the year Polaris) and run the gas out of the lines. open the bowls on the bottom or the carb (check for ANY debre) and spray CARB cleraner up in there a few times to get it all good and clean. Never use break clean as it can be harmfull to your carb.

put everything together and try again. then report back ;)



or just sell the two non doo'd and buy to good sleds (any 700 ski-doo will be killer ;) )

thanks for moving and i will try this tomorrow. Wasnt sure where to put it. Yeah love the SkiDoo its insanely fast in comparison but I think the polaris has it by a bit though

The speedo says 130, is it capable of that, or is it just for show? I know nothing about snowmobiles, I stay in Detroit and the only thing we ride in the winter other than bikes are 4wheelers.

I hope its for show. I have done 100 on it but I ran out of guts to go any faster. It was still pulling fairly well at that point so I think its possible. The Arctic Cat has seen 100 when it was newer took for ever to get there (but its a 440 so smaller engine) and thats the extent of the speedo. So it may be able to it is fairly quick.

If the carbs are still the same type as my 90 Indy 500 and 79 Kawi Invader, then it sounds to me like your floats are sticking in the float bowls. This will cause the fuel to keep flowing into the carb more than it needs and will cause the excess fuel to flow out the carb's vent tubes. I had this problem with my Indy one year, I just tapped the side of the carbs with a long 1/2" extension from my socket set and the floats free'd up and all was well. If your jets are gummed up, before you take your carbs apart to clean them, count the number of turns of the screw driver until both the air and fuel adjustment screws are fully seated. Write this down for each screw and eack carb. Then, when you have them back together, you can start by fully seating the screws and then backing them out to the previous setting. Chances are, the original settings are the correct settings unless some-one started playing with them :? . Cleaning the carbs is easy to do. Just pick up a service manual first, the exploded views of the carbs are a lot of help. You should take the carb completely apart. Then soak and spray out every passage with carb cleaner. Carbs can gum up in just 1 "off-season" as todays gas will start to break down in 3 months. Next year use Sta-Bil in your last tank full at the end of the season. Glad to hear the Ski-Doo is running well. I like the seating position on them a-lot better than my Indy. Indy's are for people with shorter legs than mine, the Cats and Doos are actually closer to my Invader as far as comfort and control. I love my Invader!! At 80mph, I feel like I'm about to break the sound barier. On the Indy, 90 feels like I'm just sitting on big Sofa. No Fear, No Fun! ;)
