Yep, 3 speed auto. Arguably the most powerful, reliable, and bulletproof 3 speed transmission ever made by an american car company. The transmission I have was recently rebuilt, and fitted with tighter first and 2nd gears, and an insane shift kit. The guy who built it said it will light up the tires through 2nd gear.

Here'* why this specific car is special.
1 The car has a V12, and the most reliable transmission you could get that year. There'* nothing like a V12, and for a car that retailed (with consideration for inflation) at $90k, you're getting more than a Kia or honda civic. Extremely high value. You can get a running XJS in decent condition for $2000. You can get one with a bad engine for less than $1000.
2. They're extremely easy to swap small block chevy engines into, and a lot of people do it.
3. If you like the v12 and you find one in running condition, the only 3 things you need to do to keep it running reliably are have the radiator re-cored, clean out the distributor, and replace all of the fuel and coolant hoses. Past that they're extremely reliable motors.
4. There'* a 750 page free e-book written by a guy who has owned these cars all of his life which is like a bible for this car. Anything that can possibly ever go wrong with this car and how to fix it or prevent it is included in this book.
This is one of those cars where if you start to learn about them, you can't help but go out and buy one. They're really amazing cars.

You don't know the half of it. If you think Bonnevilles are great, you should look under the hood of this Jag. When I first started working on it, I was amazed at the amount of engineering and ingenuity that went into the engine'* design and how everything was built. Its like renovating artwork, and when you fire that thing up, its like bringing a world war 2 bomber to life. Once I get this thing running properly again, I'll be driving it everywhere.
