There are 2 rules of thumbs here when it comes to diagnostic tools.
1. How much you are willing to spend
2. What do you want it to do.

The more you spend, the more it can do for you. If you are a seasoned mechanic, a decent one that has online capability and module testing including ABS bleed modes will set you back a couple grand.

If you are looking for something that can at least do live data monitoring, then a good one will go about $300-$400.

And above all else...stay away from the cheap imitation junk you see on ebay. If you're eyeballing a SnapOn Solus, or Tech2 for $200, run away.
