Replacing vented Delco Battery w/ Bosch in 2000 SSEi?
Is putting in a Bosch Battery in my 2000 Bonneville SSEi OK, or even preferable to Delco? My repair shop will only put in Delco; they discontinued Interstate as they said it was weak. Now I’m considering doing myself and going to Pep Boys, they have a Bosch replacement which they say is both cheaper and more powerful ($103 vs. $112, 880 CCA vs. 770 CCA). The main thing that concerns me is this comment when you look it up on the Pep Boys online parts catalog website at http://mfr.activant.com/pepboys/servlet:
BATTERY MAY BE VENTED OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE. - MANUFACTURE'* RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT MAY VARY FROM ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT.
AFAIC, these batteries better be nearly identical, given the placement under the rear seat and the way the vent harness/loop fits on the battery’* two side vents. The gasses need to make it outside the passenger compartment.
The reason for all his is I left the lights on for about 30 minutes and the car wouldn’t start at 30 degrees, trickle charged using jumping posts under the hood for 15 hours then car started and still starts now, but I want to replace seeing it’* the beginning of winter. The ‘green eye’ on the Delco battery is still green, but this is probably like an idiot light, that doesn’t necessarily mean the battery is good, right? I believe its 8 years old now; it was replaced in 1st year as part of warranty.
Anyone have experience doing this, good/bad? I am trying to avoid Delco as I have had GM cars for over 30 years, and I don’t have a high opinion of Delco. Most of that time I’ve bought Interstate & Diehard, lately I’ve bought Kirkland and had good luck. I have no idea who makes Kirkland, call it a crapshoot. I don’t expect Costco or most others to have specialty batteries with vents in them.

P.*.: I found a post with pretty accurate photos of a 2005, looks almost exactly like mine. The battery is not very clear, but you can see something that looks like a thin carrying strap on the top. It'* not, it is the vent system that takes the poison outside. This does NOT look like the Delco I have, but can't tell what brand it is. Plus, I found a dime, not a penny, under the seat.

Thanks, I'm assumoing the Bosch is vented. I went back to look at the Pepboys site and saw that they list 2 different Delcos, the 770 CCA model 100-72 and a 880 CCA model 79-72. The 79-72 is not available, they would try to sell me the 100-72.
If the first number is the series as in 'series 79', now I wonder if the Delco they would sell me would even be correct. There are a couple of notes on their website that says that 79 & 880 match with Supercharged and 100 & 770 notes don't say Supercharged. Just looking at these notes and numbers would suggest that Bosch'* model 79-880B is a correct match and Delco'* 100-72 is not.

Like Dan said it'* a 79 series and the vent placing must be identical to the OEM Delco. I wouldn't quibble over a couple dollars. Bosch isnt German for "better" and their spark plugs don't even do well in GM'* generally. Batteries in the backseat make me nervous. It only takes 4% hydrogen in air to be explosive, hydrogen sulfide makes you nausous at best and can be deadly, and O3 (ozone) causes cancer. And all 3 are bubbling out of your battery.

Yeah, I've been nervous since the beginning about having a battery in the passenger compartment for the reasons you just gave. I decided to not leave this up to guesswork or my lack of experience and knowledge, I'm having my repair shop put in the Delco as they originally wanted to do. I stopped by today to make sure that they were going to put in the 880 CCA battery, turned out that isn't what they were going to do, they were going to sell and install the 770 CCA. After they looked at the manuals and cross-reference tables, they determined that the 880 CCA was correct, they did not have it and would need to special order it. It'* probably the 79-72 battery, but they didn't answer me when I asked for the model number.
I know the Bonny has been discontinued, but it'* just stuck in my craw that this experinece is so much like my sister'* experiences with her '94 Passat with special & expensive parts. I remember when I used to be able to get voltage regulators, batteries, starters, etc. for pretty cheap with my 60s to 80s GM cars, there was a great selection and I could do a lot of the work in the parking lot without having to worry about committing a fatal mistake. We've really lost our way, and this is just an example.
