Shouldn't be going through them every year. In what way are they failing?

Agree. There are a whole bunch out there that are twenty years old and haven't gone through any water pumps.

What is bad on each of these?

They are leaking! After the first one at over 100,000 miles, it'* been like clockwork when the others have failed.

Is it the pump or the gasket that'* leaking? If the pump has excessive pressure from having a tight belt can cause premature failure of the bearing which will leak.
