Default 2004 SE temp gauge

Looking at buying a 2004 SE and took it for a drive. The temp gauge started off over the max temp position (about 1:00) and after I drove it for a while the gauge was pointing at 5:00. Any ideas? Car was not overheating.

I think the 2000'* were known for flaky clusters.

I had the same issue with my 2004 SE. I took out the cluster and had it rebuilt. I think it was $110.00. Since then I have not had any problems.
