CEL light comes on. My first computerized car after 60 years of cars, is a bit daunting having a light warning that the block is cracked, a rod was thrown, or spun a bearing, all real life experiences.
Yesterday the guy at Autozone plugs in the OBwan-kanOB machine, reads the display and tells me, "your gas cap is loose". I open the filler door and sure enough, last fill up the gas station attendant didn't bother to screw on the gas cap. Wild.
And today the CEL light went out just as mysteriously as it went on. Marvelous machines these.

Some times it works out that way. A EVAP code will be a loose gas cap 9 out of 10 times. Other codes are a bit more cryptic, such as P0171. But yes, the code readers do come in very handy.

I know of one of those in this area. I pulled in once to get gas and got out to fill up and a attendant came out to fill it for me. I stood there like what the?
Just because I have a degree in computer science doesn't mean I can bolt on a supercharger to any OBD2 engine.

Reminds me of my first time in Jersey. I'm sliding my card in the pump and a guy walks up, "Can I help you?" "No, I'm good." "Actually..."

In Oregon, gasoline can only be pumped by a station employee.
Gas station owners lobby for this because a $5 hour employee is cheaper than the multiple $10,000 self service pumps which require a $15 employee in a $10,000 cage. They say it cuts down on car fires.

Most car fires are caused by woman. Why? Because they let go of the handle, get back in the car, then get out and grab the handle, zap, a spark and a fire. Men are far more likely to hold on to the handle. And as a habit, I touch the roof of the car and then run my hand down to the nozzle.
Attendants are required to pump gas in New Jersey as well (at least the stations on the Turnpike). Theres also an Eagle around me with people who fill the tank for you. I don't know how they handle on cold winter nights.
I wouldn't call these places full service though. Its not like these guys check your oil and tires (like I saw when Marty goes to Hill Valley in 1955)
