Default Insurance Question

How do insurance companies work if you wreck your car and its your own fault? Right now I have to wait for a police report but I was just wondering if accidents are covered when you are at fault yourself. I know if you rearend someone and its your fault you are covered. Same thing?

The insurance company will pay out whatever they determine the value of the vehicle to be at the time of the collision (pre-damage). Often an adjuster will look at the car to make a determination as to whether it was average, clean, extra clean etc. Year, trim level and other factors are considered. If you don't own the vehicle outright (ie a lien due to a bank loan), the cheque will be made jointly to you and the lienholder. They will negotiate the cheque and cut you one for the insurance payout less the outstanding loan balance. At least this has been my past experience.

checks aren't always made to lienholder and insured. My company makes the check out to the insured or the shop. If it is a total loss then they just mail it to the bank and pay the insured any difference.

So even if I was driving too fast for the road conditions, they will cover me. The police officer didn't press charges yet. He said it is a possible careless driving and he has to investigate. Do you know if they charge me for careless if the insurance still covers people?

While each state and each ins co is different, it'* my understanding you are covered despite who'* fault it is. Of course, most will raise your rates or even cancel you if you get into too many accidents - regardless of who'* fault it is.

Ins co'* will not cover someone, when it was their fault, if they have Liability only coverage.

I don't think it really matters what you were doing at the time of the accident. Your insurance is there to protect you, and others, in any case scenario.

I may be wrong. Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge will chime in here.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US, regardless of who is at fault, the insurance company will:

1) Try their hardest to deny all claims; failing that, claim your obviously totalled car is not totalled, and try to chisel you on the repair estimate; failing that, set the value of your car ridiculously low, so their "totalled" payout is small.
2) Fight tooth and nail to cut corners on your repairs, particularly by trying to steer you to the cheapest, shoddiest garages and body work places in existence, claiming that crappy, non-OEM quality parts and labor is "equivalent."
3) Try to steer you to their hand-picked quacks for any medical evaluation.
4) Drop your butt, or jack your rates so high you can't afford them anymore.

1) through 3) can be fought with persistence; 4) is inevitable, so grab your ankles.

Regardless of whether it'* AllState or "Fast Eddy'*," the company will take these tactics...the only difference is that "Fast Eddy" will claim bankruptcy before you get a dime, while AllState will say "so sue me."

(Can you tell I'm not a big fan of insurance companies? )

Who'* your insurer?
