Default Performance chips

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with "performance chips?" Are they worth it? What do they all do? It seems most change the air/fuel tables....and maybe some shifting changes? I've been looking around for a while and found several different options; fast chip, superchips, and jet. For the most part everyone is around the same price $160-200. The chip will be for my 91 Regal with the N/A 3800.

For your year..they are probably getting tougher to find. As well..B'villes and Regals weren't on their hot list of cars to make chips for.

I know a few have the Jet chips here and like them....unsure if one is made for your car.

Reviews on Superchips are sub-par here, for the few (two) that I know ran them. Jet has much better reviews for the OBD1 cars. Nobody'* ever run a fastchip.

Have you found links that show links for your year and model? Personally I think some intake and exhaust work would net you more if you're still in stock form.

I have an air intake done. I used some 3.5" Flex-hose to an *&B cone filter which sits in a custom box, everything is wrapped in refeltix. As far as exhaust goes I have replaced stock parts with a magnaflow high-flow cat and muffler. Would upgrading the pipe make any difference, say 2.5" mandrel bent? If so what am I looking at spending?

I am for sure that superchips and fastchip both make chips for my car, I have gotten responses from both of them. Superchips says something along the lines of 17hp 22ft/lb while fast chip says 10 hp/tq at the wheels and they garuntee nobody'* chip is faster. I emailed Jet to see if they have one cause they start their chips at 1992 for the Regal, which I don't get because that should still be the series one motor.

It would help to know what your piping is. We don't really do regals here, particularly your generation.

Bonnevilles are 2.5" mandrel bent stainless from the factory.

I'm the only one on here that had good results with superchips.. but it was with a completely different platform.
If you really want to do a chip, get a good scan tool, read up on efi tuning, and check out www.gmtuners.com.

Alright I'll look into the piping thing and let you know, then maybe that can be discussed more in-depth.

Sorry if I'm bothering you with the Regal business, but I figured I'd come here because a lot of you seem to be more DIY/custom people since there aren't a lot of companies that make special parts for your cars unlike the popular L67 of the RegalGS and ClubGP sites.

As far as a scan tool goes, would something like this work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

I know it has a bunch of other stuff I don't need, but the main unit and the GM components. If not what would I be looking for?

Any other things you guys do to the N/A cars that give them a little boost? I know there aren't any major power boosters like smaller pullies and such, but every 2-5 hp adds up over time.

Yep that scan tool will work. A few of us have that model.
I think you may be able to get higher ratio rockers from www.seriesoneperformance.com .
You could port your stock exhaust manifolds by welding the primarys to the flange on the outside and grinding out the original inside weld.
Maybe an underdrive waterpump pulley will work on your engine?
There are a few things you can do.

While I haven't gotten to checking out my exhuast tubing size yet I have been checking on the forums and ebay for some of the other performance products you mentioned. I will soon be getting a Actron scan tool for a start.

I see you mentioned higher ratio rockers and it just so happens that someone from the forum is looking at possily a group buy or something of that manner. How much would my car benifit from higher ratio rockers since its a N/A motor? Do I have enough mods to do this with just some intake and minor exhaust work? How much of a difference is there between them 1.7, 1.8, 19? Full roller/non roller? Aluminum, steel, modified? Also, my car has 135k miles on it so would my valvetrain be able to hold up if some of these would work with the stock springs, retainers, pushrods, etc?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this kinda stuff....and thanks for all your help I appreciate it very much.
