Swap springs w/o compressor?

Is there a way to swap valve springs with out an air compressor to hold the valves up? I assume you need a real compressor, not just a little tire inflator one.

Move that cylinder to top dead center.

I thought you had to do that anyway. The valves will still contact the piston won't they? Or is this not a problem?

Well don't slam them around or anything, should be alright, maybe feed some rope into the spark plug hole as a cushion.

I've heard of people stuffing rags and stuff into the cylinders to keep the valve from falling (not that I recommend it)
