Hey guys, going to be getting a a CAI soon, so this is just a temporary mod.

I have a stock airbox with a drop-in KN filter (Xmas present), and was wondering if cutting the front off the airbox would help and not hinder?

Basically think of is as a CAI with a flat filter on the front, not as effective as a real CAI I know, but is it gonna hurt?

shouldnt hurt a bit, many of our members here have done it, theyve "gutted " their air box, basically removing the resonator inside there, search around for posts with the term "gutting" in them and im sure youll find plenty of info

Yeah I was aware of "gutting" the airbox, I was talking about cutting the whole front section off the airbox.

youd have to rig up some way of keeping the filter on there. at least on mine you would anyway. because the filter is held in place by 2 different pieces....you should probly but the year and trim level of your car in your sig too...to help out with further posts.

1994 SSEi, I plan on leaving the "rim" intact so I can still attach the clips and hold the filter in place.

aaah you have clips....must be a series 1 thing...see mine would just fall out if i took the front part off

It should be do-able. I was thinking about doing that myself, but wanted to get a spare box first. Just cut far enough forward from the panel filter so as that there is the rim of the front (of the box) and then cut just below the driver and passenger sides of of the box top so it can still be bolted to the core support.
I bet it be about 3/4 of the benefit of a CAI over the stock box.

Just realized you have a 1994. See if you can find an airbox and hose from a Series II 3800 Bonneville at a salvage yard. It will be a lbit larger so you will have more to work with for more options.

Just got back from modding the airbox. All good so far. Sounds a lot better, noticable increase in throttle response.

If it craters my engine I'll let you know...
