Well, on my second full tank of gas I got the same stinking message until I had about 50 miles on the tank. Just like my other two (and first) fillups.

I found out what the problem is. When I was filling up the tank I always gave her a little extra squirt or two after the hose shut off (that'* called "topping off" for you younger whipper-snappers. This is a no no.

Today, for the first time, I removed the nozzle as soon as it shut off and cranked down the gas cap. I did not try to top off. This is the first time the Check Gas Cap warning has not appeared within 10 miles after fill up.

The dealer says this is typical. At least for the late-model Bonne, gone are the days when we "topped 'em off". That extra fuel interferes with the vacuum and pressure check sensors until it drops to the level it should have been at when the nozzle shut the gas flow off the first time! I believe that.

Ya know, I always top mine off. I usually fill the gas tank to the gills. That sounds like a logical explanation though with the pressure sensor in the tank and over filling.

I've never had a problem topping it off. Interesting.

I am now on my second week of this. Started last Monday and by Tuesday the SES light was on too. So I stopped by the dealer on Friday and they scanned it, didn't find anything critical, so they reset it. I was cool all weekend and yesterday it started again. I suppose I will have to make an appointment now.

Code sets twice it lights up the ses also. I gave up and got a basic scanner and I clear it on my own.

As of today, 4/5/04, have run through about 5 more tank-fulls since I stopped overfilling my 2001 SSEi. I stop pumping as soon as the nozzle trips the gas flow. No more "Check gas cap" messages.

I took mine into the shop. They had to replace the fuel pressure sensor. While I had it in there I had them look at the front-passenger window regulator, because that window would quit working intermittantly. They had to keep my car over night to wait for the new window regulator, so they gave me a loaner. Total cost = no charge.

Gotta love them warrantees!
