I'm probably wrong, but I thought that the MAF screen reduces turblent air after it comes through the air intake tube.
But, if you were to have a smooth intake tube, like a short RAM intake, then the MAF may not be needed.
I considered removing it, but, I don't know much about it. Figures eh? the only guys that don't know have posted
I can be patient

Well here is some tech info about it. Sorry but you may have to register in order to view the post ( not from this forum)

The bit he said about it affecting the idling without a pipe is BS. I've had it done to my car for almost a year now, and Murdock too. There is absoltely no change in the quality of the idle. The only thing different is it'* noisier, and that'* because of the airbox being gutted. You can hear it sucking air when it'* first been started if you are standing out by the hood. Kinda cool actually.
The main problem is that the Accordian tube causes turbulance cause of the ripple.. but only affects the air closest to the ribs itself.. ( but in general the air is pretty straight with wavy affects ). However if you look at the back of a stock airbox ( with resonator still intact ) you will see a large gap and space that creates a vacuum and pressure that really distabilize the air even more then the accordian tube. True indeed that a CAI ( or smooth tube ) will create the most laminar airflow.. and true that the most gain of MAF screen will be noticed with CAI setup.. ( maybe it'* just a wording problem that'* all and should say something to the line of rough idle MAY happen with stock style setup ). I totally agree that the MAF screen is the last line of defense for any crap entering the TB and engine.. but that means you're air filter is crap.. and should've been looked after in the first place.. and that wouldn't have happened.
there'* also a write up in techinfo about it too..
So ppl with stock airbox.. it'* up to you.. it'* free mod and HP if done right and or engine is tuned.. but has side affects that is stated that MAY occur.. it'* Owners Beware.

if you guys go to my website, you will see the intake i am running. It is positioned right down behind the headlight. Now when I pulled the maf screen out, the car ran like ****. Absolute ****. It wouldnt idle at all. The car almost stalled out a couple times but the engine kicked the rpms up to prevent that. I had to put it back in and it ran alot better, thank god.
