I bought this car knowing it had a transmission issue, they told me they were driving down the road and suddenly the transmission stopped working they could turn the car off and restart it and it would move for a short distance again before stopping again. When I bought the car I started it put it in drive it moved put it in reverse it moved then we checked over other things, leaving the car running for about 15 minutes. When i got in it to leave there were no gears so I restarted the car and it moved again before I could get out of the yard it stopped again so another restart and we were off down the road, for a second then it stopped. I put the car in neutral shut it off and restarted put it in gear and floored it. It shifted perfect first second and third gear then at 80 mph it shut off witch is the best I can describe what happened. I had gears then without warning nothing like I just pushed it into neutral. After several shut down restart cycles and no results we towed the car home and nothing since then, it has no forward or reverse gears. The trans fluid is dark and burnt and over filled the fuses and electrical connectors are all OK that I can find it just seems strange that there is nothing after it shifting so well when it did. I have not had it scanned I am planning to contact a garage in the area to have that done Monday but would like to know what people here have to say first. Mostly should I look for a new transmission or should I buy parts and repair this one or have it repaired. Most transmission shops near me are shady and crooks and I have had no luck having transmissions repaired by them in the past. Its a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville not supercharged.

I recently replaced my 4T60E transmission in my 1998 Bonneville SE. I ordered a crate transmission from www.monstertransmissions.com
I installed it myslelf and works perfectly. You would probably have the 4T65E trans in your year car.
The trans ran about $1900 with truck delivery. If you return your core you'll getabout $300 back.
The good thing about the 98 Bonneville is the drivers side front cross member is removable, so you can pull the trans out easier. Don't know about a 2002 though.
Stock transmissions in these cars have some manufacturing defects. Transmissions from Monster Transmissions have those defects corrected and have a 3 year warranty. Hope this info helps

So I don't know about removable cross member have not been under the car yet as far as dropping $1900 on a new tranny for a $400 car I'm good $1900 would buy me a good running car with no issues. On the other hand I found a doner car today for $400 with a blown motor, guy said it was driving fine right up till the motor blew sounds like neglect of proper oil change habits to me happens a lot with younger kids around here. only problem is the trans code in the trunk his says F83 mine says FQ3 so mine is 2.83 final drive his is 3.05 what will this do as far a running in the car and would i be able to swap to ECM from his car to mine to correct the difference. both cars are 2002 Pontiac Bonneville neither are supercharged I'm not sure what the difference is but would this work?

Same year, both cars will have the 4T65-E. Should be a direct swap it will just get slightly worse gas mileage. Don't know the reason for the different gear ratio. Just confirm with the trans code. It should start with an M**. The info is on Wikipedia for the different trans options for the 4T65E. May be a little heavier duty with a larger torque converter or something.

So the transmissions are both 4T65E neither are the HD model torque converters are the same size hence the MN3 code witch covers both torque converter size and strength of the trans only difference is the final drive is 3.05:1 in the doner car and 2.86:1 in the car I'm fixing my main question at this point is if the computer detects the wrong ratio and does something dumb could i swap the drive train computer from the doner car and basically run the doner car with a new body rather then run the repair car with a doner transmission? If that makes sence.
