Head Gasket Leak -Woe is me!
 

I discovered the reason why my Sunbird has been idling rough after a cold start, and it's not good-she evidently has a head gasket leak. The tell-tale cloudiness in the oil did not show up until the car sat idle for more than a week, and now all the other symptoms make sense....
At present, I am pondering my options. Is it at all reasonable to undertake a head gasket replacement on a vehicle that has logged 238,000 miles? I know some people would suggest that I want MY head examined for even considering such a thing. This car has had a small head gasket leak in the past that was successfully treated with block sealer. Do any of you have experience with block sealers, and what are your thoughts?

As the old saying goes. "No such thing as a fix in a bottle".

Remember, whatever it is that you put into your cooling system to fill in holes, will also clog heater cores and other things. I'm surprised the industry hasn't forced that crap off the shelves yet.

Replace the head gasket and be done with it.

i dont think i would do it if i had to pay someone,it would likely be more than the car is worth. but if you can do it yourself maybe. the head has a pretty good chance of being warped though so you have to inspect the head and deck for square. so that will decide if its got to be machined or not and again may be more than the car is worth but if you take it apart yourself and its strait gaskets arent that much to put it back together.

Look at it this way. If the car has nickeled and dimed you too death, then its time. If its been a good car, fix it and pray for the best. Sometimes its better to fix whatcha got than buy and have a payment. Whatever you decide, flush the fix a bottle out before anymore damage occurs.
