Pass. side air bag won't turn on
On my 06 GP I just bought the Passenger side air bag won't turn on. There is a light in the speedo showing it is off and a light on the dash saying it is off.
there are about 3 pages in the owners manual that talk about it. the seat has to be in the upright position...the person has to weigh enough, etc. but nothing I seem to do works.
So I took it to the Chevy dealer and they said it needs a new Passenger presence system module kit to the tune of $670 dollars and a couple of hundred to install. Needless to say I passed.
So my Question is does any one know anything about these?
could it be just the sensor under the seat?
Should I take it to the old Pontiac dealer (now they just sell Honda'*)and see what they say?
Would it be the type or parts a person would want to get off a used / wrecked car?
Should I trust the Chevy dealer and just listen to them (I doubt I will pay to $1000 to fix this problem, probable just let the light stay on]?
Some how I got the feeling they just said yep It don't work we will just replace every thing until it does.
thanks for any input. Brian

thats what all dealers do the more they replace the more money they get. as far as the car, i would think its not something that goes frequently ive never heard of or had one go so i would think getting one in a yard would be alright. if its above your confidence level there are always decent local shops that would know what they are doing and charge 1/3 to 1/2 what the dealer charges. just go in and see if they sound like they know whats up, sound like they have decent scanners and keep up the shop.

Good luck finding an 06 in the junkyard.
I wonder if that $670 part only consists of a little spring and 2 wires that make contact. Kinda like the passenger side airbag on pickup trucks where you take your key and turn the switch.

I looked on the internet after I made that post and found a company called my air bags.com and they claim to be able to rebuild those modules. I sent them an email so I will see what they think. In fact I noticed their ad showed up at the end of these posts.
I just keep thinking it'* the sensor in the seat.
I wonder If I should take it to a body shop and see what they say. I'm sure they deal with air bags more than your average mechanic. Just thinking out loud here.

mike 1995,
I am wondering the same thing...about it being something simple. say a bad connector at the seat sensor.
Also there is a rolled o6 GP at Spalding yard in Spokane Washington, about 200 miles from me. I saw it on eBay. ended up buying the owners manual out of it. It was funny how they advertized it. Instead of showing a pic of the manual they showed a pic of a rolled GP and said the manual came out of this car. I guess they are hoping you buy more parts off it.
Anyhow I am sure there was an airbag deployment on that car!
