Sounds like the heater core under the dash. Lift back the carpet and look for wet spots.

The '03s also have the problem with the intake gaskets. If you're losing coolant, I'd expect that to show up in a drop in the expansion tank and/or the radiator, regardless of where it is leaking.

As PDad mentioned, and you checked, the most common cause of a coolant smell inside the cabin is the heater core. Other than that, something toward the rear of the engine compartment where the smell could be pulled in the fresh air intake in the cowl is another possibility. Intake leaks, coolant elbow, heater hoses, and water pump leaks could fall into that category.

Ten Gigahertz had a similar situation where he was trying to track down a coolant smell a year or two ago. He never did find the source. Recently, he had to have the intakes done. It'* hard to tell if the two would be related, however.

99% sure it'* your heater core. I had the EXACT same symptoms with our 99 back in 2003. The car had 60K miles on it at the time.

We got it replaced immediately....no more smell. Been gone ever since.

how much of the car do i have to remove to get to it, everytime i go anywhere near a newer car(75 forward any and all makes)i find that the simplest repairs on a older car is majar surgery on the newer ones i get the job done but in 3 X the time i thought, is the heater core hard to get to.

thank you

imbuddha, I'm not certain how to change it. That'* the one and only thing that I've ever paid the shop to do. It cost $275 and they kept the car for the day, so it couldn't have been too big of a job. Being a w-body, your car likely has a different procedure than a Bonneville.
