Default 2004 Bonneville, Trunk Lid Torque Rod Broken

One of the trunk lid torque rods on my Bonneville broke last week. I have been looking for a replacement and someone to install it. No parts at my local auto recyclers but did find new parts at two different suppliers. My problem is that I don't know if I need a right one or a left one as the diagram that I can access does not specify which is which. One of them has a kind of cushion/rubber padding in the middle of it and the other does not. So I don't know which one is considered the left and which one is considered the right. My mechanic, who has been in the business for over 20 years and use to be the engine guy on an auto restorer TV show doesn't know either. Says he has never seen one break but will install it for me if I can get the correct part. My son who use to work for GM and Ford, says he has seen them pop off before but never break (he is in TN and I'm in CA so he can not help me much). Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Barb, welcome to the forum, 2004 Bonneville SLE here, just ran out to the trunk to check mine for you, the torsion rod with the anti-squeak cushion (they cross over one another) has the hook on the right or passenger side of the car. If the suppliers you found have a liberal return policy you could always order both and return the one not needed if your still unsure. Personally never have replaced one, but looks like an easy job, but I've proved myself wrong on that more than once. Good Luck!

Default Thanks garagerog

Thanks. How nice of you to go out and look for me. The places that I have found the two rods (one has the right and the other the left) both have a 35% restocking fee plus return postage. However, the car is not much good to me if I can't use the trunk. I think the one that broke is considered the right/passenger side as that side of the trunk is very wobbly when I open and close it. Think I will order the right side one and if it is wrong, then so be it, will just have to then order the left. I will post on here when I get the part so that anyone else who might have this problem will know for sure. Thanks again. Much appreciated. Barbara

Default Update, no parts available

Just heard back from the companies that indicated on their websites that the parts were available and the websites were incorrect. They do not have the parts so I am back to square one! Barbara

Which model do you have?
GXP, spoiler
GXP, w/o spoiler
SE, spoiler
SE, w/o spoiler
SLE, spoiler
SLE, w/o spoiler

If you know that you could go here Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and search for trunk lid/hatch, and if you find a place that shows up with it, get their number, call them, and see if they have the parts you need.

I am pretty sure parts from a SE, SLE, and GXP will all fit.

I found 3 places that should have the right side one, which happens to be the only one I can find listed, did not see one for the left side.
As long as you do not have a spoiler it should fit.

TORQUE ROD for 2004 Pontiac Bonneville|15250808

All 3 places that carry it should be available from the link below.

William E. Thanks for the information. I do have a spoiler but since these are not part of the trunk lid, I don't see what difference that should make. Anyway, I will check these places out. One of the places I checked that said they had the right side part was a GM Parts Direct Place in SC and the other in ND and they now say that these parts are no longer available. Won't trust them though since they showed them for sale on their websites, will call these other places myself. I live in So. Cal and there are lots of junkyards near he Mexico Border and they are telling me that I need to come down and bring the part and they will check as they are not on their computer inventory. I am also going to check and see if the same part was put in any models of that years Buicks or Oldsmobile or maybe Cadillac. It can't hurt. The car runs good and I was planning on keeping it another year but will be difficult without being able to use the trunk easily and no one is going to give me even low blue book without a working trunk when I do sell it. Thanks again. Barbara

They may not make any difference, I just noticed they said "without spoiler" in the listing.
You do have a point though, technically they should not have anything to do with the spoiler, just verify if possible to be sure.

There are 3 other listings besides the one you mentioned, the websites look similar, I am pretty sure it is because the same designer did them all.It is odd the one you mentioned said they did not have the part, did you call, or e-mail them?
The part shows as available, and I am able to order it..

I don't think any other models will have the same part, as I cannot find anything but Bonneville'* listed for trunk/trunk lids, from 2000-2005 seems to have the same parts as far as the trunk goes.
