Pretty sure undercoating is a dealer arrangement. Not sure there was one common type of undercoat across all dealerships.

Why?

A friend of mine and I just had our Pontiac'* painted and would like to replicate the undercoating in the front and rear wheel wells that are visible.I know on my car their was some over spray that got in their. The body shop wants to use the rubberized stuff and I don't think GM used that in the 80s.My car and his are 100% stock and would like to keep it that way.

The only thing I can think of that would come close to what you describe in the wheel wells is that Rhino bed liner coating. Here is their website for the hardliner...

i dont think it had anything to do with the factory. my buddies 86 had a thick rubbery stuff that made everything hard to work with. it was lumpy looking like the bed liner applied with a nappy roller. but my 87 just has like what i had put on my 07 a couple years ago which is thin painted on zeibart looks flat and looks like black primer sprayed on.

Yep , GM didnt do undercoating. thats a dealer install. after 1977 you should have black primer on the floor pan. springs satin black. axle not painted. front frame & firewall satin black.
with the body color oversprayed on the floor pan.

77 and older the floor pan is red Oxide.
