As some of you may know, it is a known issue that on the 1997 GTP'*, the heads were designed differently, in that LS6 (95lb) valvesprings will not fit very well.

Would it be feasible to use 85 lb springs instead with modded 1.9 rockers, if I only am going to rev to 6000 rpm?

These are the 85lb springs.

I would think that the 85 lbs springs should work. But I'd be expecting some valve float at not much past 6K......

Is 95 recomended for the 1.9 rockers?

will newer heads bolt up? Might be better to pickup a nice set of heads, maybe someone'* old ones, to gain the better heads, and more options.

I think they flow the same, I'm not sure though. They are just made a bit differently. But yea, I would get more options. It would cost me a lot more though to get new heads, and a lot of time to yank the old ones off and put the new ones on. If the 85'* would work up to 6000rpm, I'd be all set.


And yea, most people recommend 95'* for the 1.9'*, even though a lot of people run them with stock springs as well.

85lb. springs are plenty. We have stock springs in the SSEi and it has no problems revving to 6200rpm without any float and 1.9 rockers, and it has 142k on it. Also, even with the XP cam the GTP has ZZP'* old 85lb. springs and OR pushrods and we've revved that all the way to the 6600rpm limiter with no float at all. (Zooomer said not to worry about changing the springs with the cam install because their 85lb. springs could support up to .550" lift so it shouldn't be a problem especially with the OR pushrods, and the car already had the 85lb. springs in there so we left it alone) I definately wouldn't worry about it. You would probably be fine with stock springs, but when you have it apart you might as well change them since the possibility of float is there.

Alright. I will prolly go with the 85'* then if they will be suitable.

I'd be careful with this, just because it works in one instance does not mean it will in others. Many people have had problems with 1.9'* and stock springs. If your really worried about it you can always put in 105#. That way if you move to a cam later on you wont have to worry about springs again.

What are the stock springs rated at?

I want to say 75 but i'm not completely sure.

ZZP belives they are around 60-65, but from what I have seen nobody knows for sure.

I know that it is different for every car, they all vary, but I was using the SSEi as an example. If with stock springs it can have no float even with those kinda miles, then there is no reason why a 1.9 rocker car would have any float troubles with 85lb. springs.
