oh, and for the pipe itself, what's good to wrap it in to prevent the heat soak issue? header wrap? or more of the bubbled insulation? or is there something wayyyy better than all of that?

Something insulative and reflective. Mine is both. I bought the pipe insulation tape from Home Depot. $4 for a roll. It's 3/16" thick foam insulation with reflective foil backing.

Home Depot also has the Acrylic in several thicknesses. Thinner if you're going to bend, thicker if not.

how well does the bending go? i've never worked with acrylic before, so I'm not sure the best approach. Is it best to go thin, bend, and add the refelctive material? Or is it better to go thick, and pull a foghorn and use hardware to fix everything together (and then add reflective material)? Is it just a heat and slowly bend along a nice flat edge?

Wouldn't really mind going thinner if it's a viable option - it's a lot cheaper than the 1/4 inch stock, and the overall price is somewhat high for this project already...

Can you see how mine is done? The filter makes it easy to mount. I used brackets to put it together with short sheetmetal screws, and thumbscrews to remove the top easily. If you really wanna get nuts, use a large shallow pan of water across two burners on the stove. Use this to heat it up for bending. ;)

PRACTICE first! Have a template made up, and think ahead about things you can use to bend things right.
