Stage 1 L36 engine kit on ZZP

How much HP will this kit add to my bonnie? Also how hard to install is this, and how long will it take?

L36 Stage 1 Performance Package
L36 Stage 1 Performance Package ($599 + *Core Charge)

The stage 1 L36 performance package was put together with our most popular naturally aspirated mods. It was designed to take your daily driven 3800 powered car into the 14's while still maintaining full street-ability. Gas mileage, idle, reliability, and factory warranty should be unaffected by these bolt-ons. Transform your car in one afternoon to a force to be reckoned with!

Included in the Stage 1 package are:
L36 ER Rocker arms
High velocity Throttle Body (Stage 1)
Fan Switch
180 mod'd Thermostat
Lightweight Aluminum Water Pump Underdrive Pulley
Lightweight Alternator Pulley

That makes me wonder if they have larger TB's for a 94 Series 1. Anyone know?

It says you can bolt those on in one afternoon. Probably would take a good day's work if you know roughly what you're doing.

They got nothing for series I at all...

Domestic Performance can get you a set of exhaust manifolds ported polished and ceramic coated. For series 1 mostly the ceramic coating is the gain. The port and polish provides only slight gain with a stock set up on the series1.

DP does TB Port and Polish on the series1 but it requires other components to make a real HP difference. DP can P&P all appropriate series 1 engine parts.

#1 For real HP gain a True CAI is first on the list.
#2 P&P Ceramic exhaust manifolds, intake manifold, and ported TB.
#3 I would suggest head work including cam.
#4 rebuild the low end of the engine for compression if you intend to stay NON SC. Other wise build it to take on a serious poweradder and use NOS in the interim.

The exhaust was left out because it will need to be adjusted only if you want more hp out of a power adder setup. The series 1 exhaust system is fine for the non-sc application with maybe a high flow cat.

You can get pulleys made to mimic the deal that other shops offer but the real gain will be had with optimizing the flow of the current system.

It should add ~20-25hp to your L36. I don't know much about the kit, but I can tell you that if you call or email ZZP, they can answer any questions you have, so if you have questions about their products, it would make sense that the best place to get them answered is from them.

My previous Bonneville (1997 SSE) was scraping mid 15's with those mods, yeah, I am realy glad I have a SSEI now, you can go lots faster for lots less $$ if that is important.

Glasuan 10-08-2003 05:11 PM

So what do you guys think? Should I go for this kit? Or save the money and save up for an SSEI.

If you're really going for performance, and more bang for the buck, save for the SSEi

If you go for this kit then there are some things you should know:

1. The water pump pulley won't work on the series 2 engines because of the engine cross member. ZZP does offer up a light weight pully that may help.

2. The exhast should be at least 2.5. Most cars we have run 2.4, or two and a quarter.

3. Cold air intake is a must to get this done.

4. Yes you can do this in an evening with the right tools on hand.

I am going to have to agree with everything that was said in the quoted post except for #2. All of that stuff other than 2 is definately true. The stock exhaust should be plenty large enough. The Borla exhaust we have on the GTP is 2.25". I used to think it was 2.5", but then I did some research and found out that it is actually 2.25". And as you can probably tell, the 2.25" exhaust is flowing well enough for that car, and seeing that the L36 is N/A, has the same amount of cylinders and they are the same size, and is not making even close to that much power, I don't see any reason why it would need a larger exhaust...maybe I am just stupid, but that is my opinion on that.
