Gutting stock air box..........
Does someone have a link to a write up on gutting the stock box?
Want to keep the engine compartment looking as stock as possible.
Don't want everyone to know all of the Beast'* secrets as they progress.
What should be my first project??

Try Techinfo for your first suggested mods. There'* an article there. Intake is a good place to start, right after you drop in a 180° thermostat.
For your airbox, just cut away everything but the raw shell, but make sure the ledge for the the filter to rest on must remain undisturbed.

A dremel works good for cutting stuff. First make the hole where the air comes in the front bigger. you also want to cut off that big piece inside on the back, if you open it up you should see what I am talking about. It looks like a funnel. Or you could just plug up the space thats outside of the funnel, that will give you more linear air and its probably better.

gutting the stock box is free, thats probably why he wants to do it. Make sure you have a K&N drop in to put in that free flowing box!

willwren, can you extrapolate on what you mean 'gut everything except the raw shell' what exactly is shell and what is not shell. i just got a cone filter and aluminum pipe and it definitely doesn't fit in with the casing as it is now.

that'* the exact thing i got. if i take the back of the casing out (closest to the firewall) and try to put the filter and pipe on, it is too long and hits the front of the air casing. should i just take the front of the casing out? won't that cause problems if the hot air from the radiator goes directly into the air intake? and why is my girlfriend so freaking cranky tonight? anybody? bueller?

Strangelove, try building and air box around the filter to protect it from heat.
I've had a gutted box for almost 2 years now....just getting to the cai this week.

it seems to me like too much work for a stock airbox.. the ebay pipe + cheap filter is fairly affordable.. plus to me the result of it seems to great to skimp on it.
