shifter for 88 sse
I've finally got my tranny in the shop. These guys were a big help, www.transmissioncenter.net in getting parts and a new HD torque converter. My question is, "What shifter should I put in?" I will be getting her to the strip sometime, that's my goal. I don't plan on abusing her to much. Just want something that will get me off the line better. Is there anything that anybody already has?

What SHIFTER? You mean the KNOB? Or did I miss something?
No, I mean the shifter, the mechanism that changes the gears, is there anything that is a universal fit or specific that is any better than the factory? I have seen a few b&m shifters in some 92 to 99 bonnes, but I was hoping someone would know for sure that they work w/an 88 sse. ;)

There is no performance benefit to that whatsoever. None are plug and play, all will require extensive modification.
Only one member here ever did that, and it wasn't a pretty install, and didn't do anything other than change the look. We have automatic transmissions, and your trans will still shift when it wants to regardless of the gear you select. You cannot manually shift a car more efficiently than the car would normally shift. Look at the top-25 Bonneville list for North America. All run stock shifters. Want better shifting? Have a shift kit installed. |
Is the shift kit something the tranny shop can put in when they install the tranny or is that something I should have had them do before they started rebuilding the tranny? Any recommendations on any models that have been used already?
Transgo makes a kit for your car. It must be done while rebuilding the trans.
I'll call tomorrow and see where they are and maybe I can still get that in. Thanx o master o da bonne. ;)
Called the shop this morning and they said it wouldn't be a problem, but they had never had anyone put a kit in this kind of tranny. I've always get to be out there on the fringe. :P
Congratulations on the shift kit! That's pretty cool. What is the transmission in your car, and how much did that cost?
I have the original tranny in the shop and I've heard it called a 440 and a 4t60, the early versions I guess.
