Just wondering what mods would a person need to beat a SSEI with an SE.

Top swap.

Steep hill, strong tail wind, a push from a fast car, a head start, or a top swap to install a supercharger.

I think the only one close to L67 territory, while remaining naturally aspirated, is 95NaSTA, he has a full on cam, custom headers, etc. To do it, count on a full motor build, unless you opt for Top Swap, full L67 swap, or cheat with nitrous.

Good turbo kit would do it

The L36 puts out 205 hp, and the L67 puts out 240 hp. The beefier NA cams will add about 40 hp, so a very good valve train with a great intake and exhaust will get you past an SSEi, as far as best-case numbers on paper are concerned.

Realistically though, there are more factors than horsepower that win races (torque curves, tires, weight, drag…), and many variables to consider when planning your mods.

Forced induction is the easy (and fun) way out, but if you want to stick with good old-fashioned 14.7 psi, 95nasta and Nighthwk12 are good posters to keep an eye on.
