Replacing my L67

Need some Help from the Pros.....

I threw a rod in my 02 Bonneville SSEI I have been looking for for a remanufactured Motor. I'm interested in More horsepower without sacrificing drivabilty or reliability. So can somone reccomend a head and cam combo? or cam and rockers? i don't have a huge budget but if i have to spend the money replacing the motor anyway... i can't see keeping it stock.

Thanks in advance

You could port out your stock heads and that will help out. If you want to buy heads it will cost you. ZZ Performance

If your building, I suggest a cam. ZZ Performance

i would definately suggest the L32 swap. it has a stronger bottom end and the gen 5 m90. it would be my choice if my L67 blew up.

X2. L32 gets you 20 more HP with out doing anything but changing the Fuel Rail and Throttle body from your current motor. The L32 Fuel rail and injectors will not work with your SSEi the same with the TB

ok.. i got an L32 with 42k miles. The oil pan is aluminum with an engine mount. will the fit in my car or i need to swap pans? and my Mechanic says he hears a clicking sound when he spins the supercharger. what might that be and if the SC needs to be removed will the gaskets i just bought for the L67 work?

Woody,

I saw your thread on 3800pro:
3.8L Aluminum Oil Pan??? - 3800Pro.com Forum

The fact that the JY engine has an aluminum oil pan is not enough proof that it is an L32 (04/05+).
H-bodies have had aluminum pans on L67 since 2000.

What year/make/model did it come from?

If you are still unsure whether it is L67 or L32, a simple way to be certain is: does the fuel rail have both an inlet and a return fitting (i.e., two fuel lines=L67), or is it returnless (i.e., one fuel line=L32)? Another is: does the TB have throttle cables (L67), or is it drive-by-wire (i.e., sensor-driven=L32)?

Maybe it came with neither the rail nor the TB...in which case, post/host a pic of the supercharger, so we can tell if it is Gen3 (L67) or Gen5 (L32).

Maybe the S/C's not available; in that case, post/host a picture of the front cover crank seal (balancer would have to come off). I could tell by seeing that seal whether it's L67 or L32.

One other thing; even if it is officially an L32, it is possible that it does not have the Series 3 internals, IF it is of 2004 vintage. In '04 GM was still using up old Series 2 / L67 internals, even if the engine was coded Series 3 / L32.

If you're STILL unsure, post/host a picture of the connecting rods (from underneath, with the oil pan off, where they are connected to the crank); then we can tell the most important thing about the bottom end--whether they are the old L67 cast rods or the new L32 sinter-forged rods.

One more detail...are the valve covers molded in black plastic, or are they the beige color?
If black, it is definitely a 2005+ L32. If beige, it is most likely an L67, though it could be a 2004 L32.

Whatever the case, don't worry; anything that bolts to an L67 block will bolt to an L32 block.

I don't know what year it came from.. i purchased from ActionSalvage.com was advertised to fit
2000-04
B:Bonneville '00-03 (3.8L, 6-231), w/supercharger, (VIN 1)
B:Park Avenue '00-04 (3.8L, 6-231), w/supercharger, (VIN 1)

I don't have access to the motor. it's at my mechanic garage(30 miles away). On Monday i will ask him if the Valve covers are black. I'll also ask if it has fuel lines running over the top of the supercharger like my old one. If it's an L32 it won't have those
That should tell me for sure right?
I still have a question about the oil pan.. do i need to change it?

agrazela 02-07-2009 09:46 PM

Based on the cross-reference, I'd say it's likely an L67, but we'll see.

Yes, fuel rail with tubes kinda "squarish" in cross section and only one feed line and no return line, and no integrated fuel pressure regulator (and black-colored, not white, fuel injectors) would definitely confirm L32. As would black valve covers.

I do not know the answer on the oil pan question. Indeed, if your mech is saying the pan on this engine is different from what's on your car now, either this is an L32 or it came from a different body (W-body, maybe).

Get some pics of that oil pan, too.

THANK YOU Agrazela.....
Problem solved
I misunderstood him on the phone when I spoke to him. I though he was saying the motor he received had the aluminum oil pan.. The new motor is an L67 also
