time to gut the air box
i am thinking about gutting my air box for awhile until I can get ahold of an intake from Intense...any ideas,thoughts,suggestions?...what should I be mindful of?What should stay and what should go?
if anyone has any links to articles, threads ect. that would help too: )...I tried a forum search but came up with over 7000 responses :?[/i]

in my airbox there was a set of baffles in each section of the airbox, if you have a dremel it will be your best friend here, basically the baffles come out as a separate piece that is plastic welded into the airbox, basically go around cutting the welds and the baffle piece will come out...usually with a fair deal of persuasion, you should be able to see what im talking about....when i gutted mine i also enlarged the hole in the front from about a 2 inch round hole...youll see it, its ridiculously small....i cut that whole little section off....the hole in the front of my airbox is about 4x5inches or so...its hard to describe....basically i think the only thing to be gained from gutting the airbox, aside from maybe some better throttle response, and thats usually at higher speeds, is a way better engine sound.....but be prepared...it will be pretty loud, especially on cold starts where the engine is running closed loop or whatever its called...but its a good time, i would definetely use a dremel if you can, and be sure you clean up all your cuts really good, and make sure there arent any little chunks of plastic left in there or left hanging when you put it back together, a piece of plastic getting sucked into the engine could be bad...of course itd probably never make it past the MAF screen, but better safe than sorry....

Speaking of which, a few hp can be gained from remvoing the MAF Screen. Some report an extremely poor idle, but just give it a day or two to adjust and it'll smooth out. Only took 10mi for me, but our cars are very much different.

not true, there is NO documented gains be removing the MAF screen....and every car is different, some have it out had have no problems, some have a terrible idle. If i was a betting man, I say that its not slowing down the airflow, and you want to airflow to be as laminar as possible to get an accuate reading....hense the prupose for the MAF screen

and about the MAF screen, i guess you can try to remove it, but i honestly think the air in a gutted airbox is pretty turbulent, theres just more volume of air moreso than a smoother flow or anything, if i was running a smooth pipe intake such as the rice pipe or any other setup like that i would probably remove the MAF screen because the air is pretty laminar to begin with, but having the air flowing through a gutted airbox, then through the accordian tube, it almost has to be pretty turbulent.

yes you have larger problems that wont dictate if you can chirp tires with the MAF screen or not
even a smooth bend pipe has turbulence in it.....ill guarntee it.... there is no way to get perfect laminar flow in an intake
