Default Adv. Cruise Control

How about this feature in a car...
Have a speed detector mounted under the hood or somewhere out of sight so that it can read the speed off the car in front of you. Then, hook it up to the PCM so that when you hit a button it reads the speed off of the car in front of you and then matches your speed acorrdingly, monitoring the other car every sec or so. Sort of like an advanced cruise control. Do you guys get what I'm saying?

Oh I like that!!!

Advanced sonar detection, monitors and controls distances, only when the cruise is engaged, cool idea. And have it displayed in the HUD.

Caddilac did it in the Deville DTS with the night vision feature, I'm sure the technology would work!

i got the idea when we were going to fla over spring break, i hate trying to match the speed of the driver in front of me in heavy traffic, the hardest part would be getting the two machines to talk to each other.

It would be difficult to get the automobile manufacturers to agree on a common language base for this particular application. But eventually it could become as simple as a standard part, integrated with a cruise control option.

I've seen it done already. But they were using it so that you could get cars about 2 feet apart to be able to fit more cars on the road. But I knwo exaclty what you mean. You put cruise on then you have to hit the brake, then you can put it on again then the car in front slows down again.

Very hard ride. It would need an average time for it too work and that gonna be impossible on regular roads. Fuel milage would drop and that would make the term "high way miles" look like crap.

And then the car in front of you changes lanes. And the only thing your car sees off in the distance is a jet.

as for the other car changing lanes, all you need is a distance measureing thingy, and when it jumps (hitting the car ahead) then it turns off, sort of like an automatic toilet in reverse Mounting it in the middle of the car, aiming it right and making it a narrow beam would solve those problems...We dont need all the car mfgs. to agree, we just need to get one that works with our bonnies

Laser rangefinder. Feedback to the cruise. It'* been toyed with by the manufacturers. If someone were creative enough, you could build your own. The trick would be to have 3 lasers all pointing forward. Make sure you were seeing the car ahead correctly. If one laser return wasn't detected, it would still have 2 more to pick up. Molding dips, holes, etc could all disrupt the return.
