Ebay Performance chips for $5 to $30, Do they actually work?
Hey Everybody,
I have a 1996 Bonneville SE with no performance mods at all. I am looking to get some extra get up and go power and I was wondering if those cheap "perfomance chips" from ebay actually work. If you don't know what I am talking about go to ebay and type in "bonneville performance chips" there will be about 100 anywhere from $5 to $30 or $40. They say that they increase HP and MPG by making the engine run leaner. And I guess they only take 30 seconds to install (or something like that).
Let me know your opinion,
Thanks,
BumpinBonneville17

Yea like all these guys said, complete scam.
Oddly enough we actually have a few of those lying around somewhere here.... If you really want one hell I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping.

Read the "debunk the myths' topic at the top of this section. It'll keep you away from all the other garbage too, since these guys covered the resistor in a box for you.
I'm glad you're one of those who ask first, rather than one that falls first, then gets pissed.
How about posting some good options guys? Jet and DHP have you covered, I know that much. INTENSE unfortunately doesn't.

None of our cars are throttle by wire. We all have Throttle Position Sensors though.
However, NONE of the ebay chips do that. They simply trick your car into thinking the outside air is colder. That'* worthless after your MAF and MAP sensors, as well as your O2 sensor all disagree with the new modified IAT signal.

FWIW the PCM doesnt listen to input from the 02 sensor when under WOT, which is when most people would be looking for that extra "performance" so I think there is a scant possibility that they could work.
They trick the PCM into richening the fuel mixture right? But the only sensor that can tell that difference is the O2 sensor, which is ignored during WOT/Open Loop mode.
Its just something that occurred to me the other day, probably while I was on the john or something.
