Default Factory EXHAUST RESONATOR...UPDATE.

Anybody have access to dimensions of the resonator used by the factory?
Inlet/Outlet/Core Diameters? Length? Overall diameter of the unit?

I just stopped by the muffler shop where I had my MAGNAFLOW/ANSA setup installed and was discussing the installation of a glasspack vs. resonator.
The Boss recommended a 14-16" resonator from whatever mfg. catalog he had there, and wasn't too enthused about my idea of installing a Cherry Bomb glasspack, stating that they're outdated technology.
My thought is that it'* basically the same technology.
The reason I chose the Cherry Bomb is for the perforated vs. louvered core design.
Keep in mind that I'm attempting to quell the slight raspiness at a certain rpm range while getting a bit of a deeper tone to the system that was expertly installed.

I've got lots of time in checking this out and think I'm on the right track, but, I've got to know if the Cherry Bomb part #87516 is going to fit.
2 1/2" Inlet/Outlet/Core size; 3 1/2" Overall diameter; 29 1/2"" length.

It'd be installed after the cat as far back as possible before the exhaust pipe make the bend to the muffler.
I'll post a couple of links for you to use for reference.

CHERRY BOMB GLASSPACK install on a Jeep with a straight 6.
This link also has sounds.

Looks like he tried two different Cherry Bomb mufflers. The long, straight one is the one I'm looking at using. Click on the pictures for a better look.

Nothing would make me happier than to go on my hunch and be right about the final sound on my SSE. It'* been fun so far. I'm still working on getting my sounds recorded for use here on the Forum.

Thanks.

OK, I had a TREValation today...

I crawled under the SSE to look and measure (whatta concept).
The part # I was looking at is WAY TOO LONG.
I didn't realize the exhaust system snaked around under there to the degree it does.

What I found was an area directly behind the CAT, and one on the right side more to the rear, that would accomodate the insertion of a glasspack of shorter dimensions.
Both of these areas have what appears to be a heat shield above them.

The behind the CAT idea doesn't look too good. Plus, it'* right under my ***.
The area further back on the right side looks correct, but, the muffler can only be 18" long- MAX.
Even then, it will be right at the bend in the pipe. So be it.

The part # from Cherry Bomb is 87510, which is 2 1/4" inlet/outlet/core diameter.
When I went to the store that had the other part on hold, they also had the above part.
Comparing the two, the only difference between them was that the 2 1/2" inlet/outlet is flared up from 2 1/4". The inside looked identical. The major difference was the length.

I switched out for the shorter one and will have to talk the 'muffler guy' into squeezing it into the limited length of pipe by cutting off the ends, much as he did when installing the ANSA tips. It'll be tight and I KNOW he'* gonna roll his eyes when I show up with this unit!
Another side note is that the dual resonator tips have the exhaust flow showing up on the outside of the tips more than the inside ones. I don't know if there'* a way to redirect the flow now that they're already installed, short of zapping in a little baffle, which probably won't be practical or possible.
I checked the Thrush/DynoMax site and they don't have a unit that fits this application, even though the glasspack is of the perforated vs. louvered design.
That'* the update on the mission to use the Cherry Bomb perforated core glasspack as a resonator. Is this just totally obsessive, or what?

good luck, and keep us posted. I dont think it'* too obsessive, you are going to be listening to it whenever your are driving your car, so I would call it a necessity. Are you gonna get us some pics when you are done???

if the end of the exhaust is the same as my 93 se then the pipe makes a 90 turn to the left then has like a u bend comming back to the right and then makes a nother turn that connects it to the muffler. If this is how it is you probibaly could have that hole ubend cut out and put a strate pipe there.

I looked under the car yet again and I think there would be a serious loss of ground clearance trying to go with a straight section in that location.
Looks like I'm pretty much stuck with the stock pipe system and trying to convince the 'muffler guy' to squeeze in the Cherry Bomb.
I'm starting to get the feeling that what I'm doing is what'* called "taking one for the team".

...

If you check out my install here you can see how they straightend out my pipe. Because most of the pipe is equal distance back to the wheel I rarely have an issue with ground clearance from the exhaust. The only place I have an issue is if I back out of my parents driveway too fast (at an angle) and meet up with the road to quickly (level road). Otherwise I never have any issues. Food for thought...
