yes, another of these threads. i currently have a gutted airbox, but after reading so much about smooth airflow being so important, i may want to do a rice pipe intake.
my question is, would putting some tubing and a K&N cone filter INSIDE the stock airbox (basically using it as a heatshield) be any improvement over stock? That way i would have a smooth intake pipe for airflow and not have to fabricate a shield... i would open up the front of the airbox of course

It'* been done, and done and done.

Don't do it unless you insert smooth tubing inside the stock accordian tube.

Read today'* other post with design guidelines by me. A couple below this. The accordian is the worst part of the stock system.

At that point, you'd have a standard CAI with the stock airbox as a heatshield. It would perform as such.

It should lead to some answers since that seems to be where the CAI thing started. It'* the post where willwren announced he ordered some parts, and others chatted about 180 degree thermostats. That'* pretty cool. Most of those members, when you search with their names as authors and CAI or cold air intake as the key word(*), should have quite a few posts each about this.

Nobody makes a kit. Most here buy a 'rice pipe' from autozone, get a K&N, and fabricate their own heat shield.

Why don't you tell us your budget, and we'll show you the parts?

What'* wrong with your MAF sensor?

I got about $400 for a CAI.
A friend told me that I needed a new MAF sensor if I did a CAI.

I looked thru the pics and threads here.
I saw the steel tube/pipe coming from the throttle body inlet where the according tube is. Then I saw a K&N cone filter on the end of the pipe in a box. Yours looked like clear acrylic. Others had boxes that were wrapped in insulation.

I saw talk of a temp sensor? from the factory box.

I also assumed after reading that you can hook the pipe/tube to the factory box with the K&N inside it. Seems some things need to be gutted.

Has anyone made a video of this yet? If not I could film my install to help others, but I will have a ton of questions as I go.

This is the one reason I wish I lived closer to guys who have successfully modded these cars already.

Turbo Connection said he would install the CAI and run tests on the car and I could pay him to dyno it before and after Cai/exhaust upgrades. The problem was he said I had to get all the parts I wanted together first. He did not want to gather the parts, just install them. That is why I was hoping Intense had a kit.

The exhaust is a bit more than I planned on...$600 for Cat/Muffler and pipes. Extra for tips at $140 each side. Tips might not happen as I don't think they are priced reasonably.
Cat and muffler maybe. Cat for sure. The Cat installed was only $200. Not sure how adding the rest of the pipe back and muffler was another $400?

Each month, I am putting around $300 aside to do some work on the car. Maintenance first. Then upgrades.
I want to do the Cat in March and the Cai by mid May.

When I ask mechanics about it they tell me that the CAi will cause the service engine soon light to come on and stay on. They claimed some DIY setups take on water from the fenderwells. They say the have removed more CAIs on imports than they have installed. This means I have not found a speed shop that is into modding newer vehicles. In these parts, it is still the older rear drive cars that get the "hop-ups".

March includes the spark plugs and wires also.

I will keep searching the threads and reading more as I will probably DIY the CAI.

Whoever told you that a new MAF was required is an idiot. Don't let them breed.

Whatever mechanic told you you'd get an SES light is a liar or a fool. Don't go back there.


Get a coupler, a rice-pipe from Autozone, and a K&N filter, then spend about 20-30 more at Home Depot to make your heatshield.

You can drill a hole and get a rubber bushing for your IAT, or enlarge the hole and install it in the filter.
