New cat, new smell

I just put in a high flow cat, now sometimes I get that rotten egg smell that is often attributed to a bad convertor. What's the deal?

Jim W 09-18-2003 09:01 AM

I had that problem too, usually attributed to a wonky O2 sensor

I thought that smell was normal with new catalytic converters. Isn't that why most new cars have that smell untill the converter wears in.

J Wikoff 09-18-2003 07:36 PM

I guess that would explain it.

SSEi 09-18-2003 08:17 PM

Yeah i hope so, that is honestly what i have heard from many people, but to be safe you could try calling up the place where you got it from and ask them if it's normal. Cause if it's a high flow cat you probably paid decent coin for it so you don't want it to be faulty. I would say im about 98% sure that it's because it's new though.

That smell is the new chemicals mixing inside the cat (not completely active). They do not completely filter the exhaust gasses until you have driven the car for quite a while. I believe the break in is close to 1000 miles, but I have heard different opinions.

I think Will and some others have tried the Bosch O2 and it smelled bad and wonked out in a month.

J Wikoff 09-19-2003 05:06 PM

Im in the market for 1 of those bad boys too!

I also would like a new high flow cat, that just fits like a glove and do not want any extra cost or custom work cause I got to save up for my WS6 8) .

J Wikoff 09-22-2003 12:28 PM

Carsound brand, made by Magnaflow, 2.5", eBay, $52 with shipping, got it welded on at Midas for $75 (kinda pricey for some cutting and welding).
