My CAI box is almost done. (EDIT: NOW WITH PIX)

I have the aluminum all bent. Just need to do 1 more mounting bracket. Then it'll be painted and mounted in the car.

randman1 07-02-2004 09:14 PM

Mandrel bending? Do you have access to such machinery?

macho_mike21 07-03-2004 12:52 AM

i think he means the heatshield box.

Bassplayincrowe 07-03-2004 01:12 PM

It's called a vice and wood. Yeah i guess you could call that my bender.

Damemorder 07-03-2004 01:14 PM

Got pics? What thickness are you using? Making templates?

My Celotex has basically disentigrated over time and I was just looking at a Wizaired thinking "I'm not paying that money for some bent metal, fook that"....

Bassplayincrowe 07-04-2004 07:15 PM

No pix yet but it is installed. Helped a lil. It's pretty thing aluminum.

I do have a pattern but is is tight and for a bonneville without the headlight washer. I was thinking of making blank ones where you'd have to cut out your space for the tubing. But im not sure. They would be like 15 bucks each.

BonneMeMN 07-04-2004 07:17 PM

I may be interested in a box if you sold them...

Bassplayincrowe 07-04-2004 07:25 PM

These wouldn't be fully completed. You'd probably want to primer/paint them after you cut out your spot for the tube to go through. It doesn't fully seal off the area (way to hard to get something to fully fit it.

It uses a design similar to wills. But not really. I used the factory box mounting pieces for the brackets.

So depending on the design of the years. I could include.

Rough Box that needs final cutting/sanding for your tube and finishing(paint).
Edging
Bracketry

Probably for 20 bucks shipped to you.

Lets see if i got some batteries in my camera so i can take pics.

If i were to offer this the brackets would not be holed steel. They would be solid. But you may need to drill the mounting holes in them from where the stock factory airbox location mounts are. You can use the original box screws.

Also the aluminum would not be painted. Nor final cut, there is to many different variables for me to offer a 100% finished plate. Also the filter does rub against my box, but the aluminum is very flexible and moves to the filter when the engine flexes.

Edit: I will probably be buying some reflectix that I could include with the kit as well.

Hmm, I'll probably take one if you think I can make it work with a headlight washer tank.

PontiacDad 07-05-2004 02:38 AM

Nice setup, how does it sound and feel over the stock box?

Bassplayincrowe 07-05-2004 03:00 AM

jwikoff99 - get me detailed pictures of that area with and without the stock airbox if you can. I'll see what i can do.

It's quieter in the cabin now with it installed. The computer is still relearning but theres better getting up and go in the mid 3k RPM range. The car stays at a more consistent temperature. But it projects the sound out to the front left. I drove in my malls parking garage sunday and...boy. Is the engine freakin loud.

Edit: jwikoff99 - from looking at your intake I don't believe there is enough room for you to use this box becuase of your filter and pipe choice.

J Wikoff 07-05-2004 03:12 AM

Well, my filter comes straight forward, and points down some. It has about 3/4" clearence from the radiator hose and a little more between it and the washer tank. The intake tube sits on the ELC compressor.

J Wikoff 07-05-2004 03:23 AM

Here's some pics. They're big, so I'll just give links. I'm looking to make my intake prettier.
