MSD Ignition control?
 

I want to upgrade my ignition. And the only name you hear in ignition is MSD. Which system is the best for our cars, theres about 5 of them i can see for our cars on a few sites. And also what kind of performance gains can be expected from this new ignition if any at all.

Not alot of gains, but the 92-96 SSEi's can gain a small bit of hp in the mid-upper rpm bands by switching to the 8224 coils. They're hotter than our stock coils, but I'm not sure if they're hotter than the 97+ SSEi stock coils. The 8224's are a direct bolt-on to your stock ICM.

The MSD DIS4 system will require adapters for the coils, and would probably only be worth it if you were SERIOUSLY modding. The stock ignition system is quite capable.

Are you looking to control timing revs etc? The DIS 4 will work, but after reading a bunch i've been intrigued by the MSD 6 series, the 6A and 6AL as well. Much cheaper, maybe missing some features, but you'll have to check it out on your own.

Would those coils work for a 96 N/A? I'm wanting to get some power roaring in my 3800.

last i checked the 6 series won't work on a DIS car... only the DIS series... the heavy hitters are prolly waiting for the programmable DIS 4 (they have a programmable DIS2 so far)

but the DIS MSD system I think is worth the money if you plan on using it's features...

while I may not use them often the 2stage rev limiter... and the high RPM timing retard .. I think are very nice features

the low rpm multi spark will help on the low end, and fuel economy too

personally I think if you go through intake, exhaust, chip, the MSD 4 is a very logical step

or if you want to scare away some people with the rev limiter.. including some ricers :twisted:

oh yeah, the only control box which works with our cars is the DIS series like projectheavytouring stated.. the 6 and 7 series work with distributer based cars.. its the same concept, just a different application.

The fastest 3800's in the country are running stock ICM's and Coils. Think about it ;)

They DO have the hotter 97+ SSEi/GTP coils, but nothing more. So again, there really isn't anything to gain on a typically modded car by doing this.

It's all about what you want to control your timing. Don't the DIS 4 boxes have the breakout boxes to adjust timing on the fly?

If you have a scantool, and want to get into some SERIOUS tuning, that may be of benefit, but I wouldn't get into it with minimal mods.

I'm not doubting that stock type 2 isn't good... we all know it is.. as you said the type 2 is used on the fastest 3800 cars... but not all of us are in it just for drag times... the DIS4 doesn't have on command timing control but it does have a high rpm timing retard (you set the rpm and how much you wanna retard @ that rpm and up)

the multi spark @ lower rpms will help with throttle response, fuel effeciency.. emmisions...

for us occasional racers mainly dialy drivers... these are great things...

for the racers... the 2step rev limit and the high rpm timing retard can come in VERY handy

personally the low rpm multi spark and the 2step rev limit is the main reason I want one... as I'll mainly be doing daily drive... with the occasional Bracket race drag weekend ...or more frequently AutoX days


it may not be for everyone... but it does have benifets for ppl looking for certain things... no matter what the fastest cars are using
