Mod questions on a stock 2001 SSEI

I have a stock SSEI with 66K and am considering a few light mods. I would like to add a little power without spending to much $$$ or hurting reliability. What are the best mods to consider.
Exhuast?
Pulley?
??
Thanks
Christian

Pulley 180* thermostat and FWI to start with, then go from there
after that would be PEMs/ Headers, Highflow Cat, Rockers, smaller pulley, and a PCM

What size pulley? and which are the easiest to do? what is a FWI?
Sorry for all the extra questions I am new to GM products?
Any ideas of power gains?
What is all the talk about U-bend deletes and downpipes?
Thanks

toastedoats 08-18-2006 08:56 PM

u-bend is a grand prix thing, you dont have to worr about that.

basically, as you start modding, anything you do will allow you to use maller and smaller pulleys.

if your completely stock, i would recommend nothing smaller than a 3.5" pulley, after the FWI (fenderwell intake) and 180* thermostat, you SHOULD be safe to run a 3.4"

i wouldnt recommend going any lower than the 3.4 without doing either rockers or a cam swap.

true, but for the ammount of cost and labor, the level 2 isnt a whole lot of investment for the HP gain either... when i get my L67, im going to skip to L2

I didn't know we could do the stage 2's but I guess the only difference is the rocker/pushrod combo from stage 1.

Opps and the spark plugs

You can do level 3's on our cars, I've just been to busy to add the Bonneville to the dropdown list.

Wish I would have known that sooner I would have got the level 2 pkg.

I have a Thrasher Pulley install & removal tool. Used it once two weeks ago to install my pulley. Its yours for $59.00 that includes shipping I have a 2001 SSEI. I also installed a 180 thermostat, MSD coil Packs, Intense FWI, NGK TR55 Plugs,3.4 pulley & Gatorback Belt. Have Hogan 3inch down pipe & convertor. Not sure if I'm going to put it on yet. Next will be a Intense PCM and Ported exhaust manifolds. I think that's about that its my daily driver. Don't want to go into the engine and mess up reliability.

Anyone have a M90 Pulley Puller around the Kansas City, MO area?

VanFaasenC 08-31-2006 09:18 PM

OK found a 3.4 Press on pulley. Some please explain KR and how to check and if anyone lives in MI and can help or has the tools let me know. Also how do you get rid of it.I will be doing a stock style K&N drop in and a Tstat but not sure what Degree.
HELP PLEASE

LittleHoov 09-01-2006 12:03 AM

Well, from what Ive gathered after lurking around this place, its hard to drop to a 3.4 pulley without some supporting mods otherwise you will get alot of knock retard(KR).

knock retard comes after what most people would call "pinging"....right now im freakin tired and i cant even remember what causes it.

But basically you will get a lot of KR meaning that your engines timing will be pulled or "retarded" meaning you will get hampered performance and your 3.4 pulley will not live up to its full potential.

From my understanding the minimum supporting mods for a 3.4 pulley are some type of intake with a heat shield and a high flow cat...some may or may not recomend a 180 thermostat as well.

If youre keeping the stock airbox with a K&N, a 3.5 pulley might be better for you.

that is what i would recommend for some more "fun" out of the car

VanFaasenC 09-01-2006 08:35 AM

I got a good deal on the 3.4 for $30. I will always be running 93/94 Octane. I looked at a FWI but after studying the stock set-up airbox I felt it looked like a pretty good set-up and would pull in some good cold air and I would just add a litte better flow. T-Stat is just easy and cheap some if it helps I will do it. What else helps get rid of KR.Can a dealer reflash the PCM to help??
I have also considered a PCM but plan on doing more mods so wanted to wait so I would have a better Idea of what to get it burned like.
From what I understand about knock is it can be caused by cheap gas and Timing which would also be effected by air temp with going into winter here in MI I was hoping it would be cold enough air to help get me thought the winter leaving more time to save $$ and get more mod ideas.

I am open to doing more mods just need to find the right ones. I think $170 for the FWI i have seen was overpriced! What is envoled with gutting the stock air bow and will that help?

I am just trying to get as much info as possible and not send unnessacary $$$. I welcome any more info and other peoples results. I am also looking for deals on other mods.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to put down some info and please keep bringing it.

Do you still have this to sell, If you do please pm me with payment details. Also what is the part number for your coil packs? I have been interrested in picking a high performance coil for a bit now.

SSEi-Ei-O 09-08-2006 02:19 AM

Both ZZP and INTENSE state clearly that the stock OEM ignition system is fully capable of handling hot mods. This is true for the 97+GTP and SSEI's. --Wilwren
Nevermind on the MSD coils, I don't need it apparently.
