Default Turbo and SC

Ok... was talking a little about this in the chat rooms. Was wondering what would be involved in doing a turbo and SC setup. Just beginning to look right now. I know that a boost controller would be necessary, as well as some decent tuning. As far as what size turbo to get, that I am unsure of. I know I would probably want to use the supercharger at the lower RPM'* for the torque, and the turbo at the higher RPMs. I believe will mentioned using the boost from the SC to spool the turbo, which I will have to look into. I might go and pick up a IC and turbo out of a Volvo 760 and a turbo probe at the yard by me when I am there next. I figure the turbo will be too small, but will give me something to look at. I am not planning on even attempting anything til spring, but I want to get opinions on this now incase it proves too much for me to handle, or it will cause a huge issue. Money should be fine in the spring since I should be hired full time someplace by then.

So basically I need thoughts and ideas, issues that will arise, turbo size, and any other comments. Will be using the search function some other time when I can.

The reason for twin charging is so that you can use a larger turbo and not have turbo lag.

Would twin charging be too much for the M62? It doesn't have near the "headroom" of an M90 from what I understand.

The headroom issue is a new one to me. I will have to look into that one. If anyone has any articles on twin charging, I would also be interested in links to them. Again, got work and school, so no google search til after.

You just wouldn't be able to go as big with the turbo. . . ...+ you might run into problems with not having an IC for the SC.

theres a whole mess of other things your going to have to do if you want to twin charge a car, the turbo is the cheapest part your going to have to do a Full engine overhaul lower comp pistons, forged crank, rods, and pistons, overhaul of the ignitions system and Fuel system. It'* just to much work. Not very practical for a street driven vehicle.

Um.....no.

He already has a forged crank and pistons, and it'* already setup for forced induction. He'll be bypassing the SC as the Turbo spools.....so there may need to be MINOR changes in fueling. None in ignition. Depending on how much boost he runs on the Turbo.

VW is introducing a twin charged engine in Europe. They are going for economy and the system is a bit overkill but interesting.

You would not need to go as complex but it shows the potential of the concept when taken to extremes.

correct me if im wrong but you will need a big turbo if you want high rpm power,
if you take for example an eagle talon wich boost at 12 psi, the turbo kick at 3500rpm...
before the spool a civic can follow that , if you put a smaller turbo on a Talon (wich i already try, (the turbo was off a Protege) i think, and the turbo spooled at 2500rpm, but we were lacking high rpm boost, in fact it was good for autocross but slow on highway.)

i presume that on a 3800 v6 it will come sooner than 3500, like 2200-2500.

smaller is the turbo , sooner will be the power but youll have nothing in high rpm.
(thats why twin-turbo exist, lot of boost but you have it at low rpm)

go at least with Talon\eclipse\laser turbo or bigger 14 or 16 psi can be good or you will have sc and turbo at like 3000 rpm and feeling nothing at 5000.

may be a small turbo can do the job too, hard to say, its at your liking.

may be with a boost controller you can adjust all that, anyway, my bet is at something close to 12 psi or more.

its been a while i dont play with turbo car, and the test we did was not involving a boost controller, i dont know if you can adjust rpm spool point??

Good luck, keep us inform , nice project.

There are different route you can take to twin charge your car. I probably wouldn't run an extremely elaborate turbo setup, try to keep it simple. I would find a smaller turbo, because it will be more fun to drive around town. With a small turbo they spool up much faster, and you would also have the SC picking up the slack. Late body style Eclipses have a Garrett turbo that spools up relatively quick, and an internal wastegate. The internal wastegate will save you some money and save a little trouble. The same body style Eclipse also had a stock side mount IC, it was small, but made for that turbocharger. You have to remember that the bigger the intercooler, the more it will cool the air, but you lose boost with an IC, the bigger it is the more boost you lose. I would strongly recommend a boost controller, it would help in the battle against KR. My old roommate had a turbo Honda Crx, he had a blow off valve on it, that was even cooler sound than whine
