Gutted Airbox ???
I never really examined the intake system until today.
I don't understand how I would "gut" my airbox, since there is nothing inside of it. There is a pipe leading to the airbox, then the filter, and a hose to the TB. Ya there are those little reservoirs hanging off of it for some acoustic tuning, probably.
So at the risk of being controversial, I don't see that much wrong with the stock intake setup. It pulls air from behind the headlamp, just like you want. The filter has a lot of area for airflow.... and you could put in a K&N.
So where is the problem.... hmm well the actual intake area is not huge, but GM could have made it bigger.. but they didn't for some reason. Maybe they didn't need to? The hose going to the TB is a corrugated style, so yes it isn't perfectly smooth, but the engine needs to move.
I am wondering if half the performance gain of these intakes is the sound level. Yes, I am posting this to get a response, and no I am not trying to insult anyone.
Oh, I also took at look at the MAF filter. I can see where that would be a restriction point. I also think that mine could use a good cleaning, it looked like it had some buildup of "stuff" on the inside edges of the holes. Not a lot, but something. I will have to take it out and clean it up.

I installed a K&N in my stock airbox..and basically had a better filter in the same crappy box. I couldn't tell the difference in performance. That'* why I got the ADTR.
But I also didn't run more tubes into my box like Will did.

The best stock airbox design was on the 87-91 models. Striaght run of tube from the airbox to the TB and engine

On my stock box the only real restriction is the tube BEFORE the filter (by the headlight) because it is reduced almost an inch in diameter therefore cutting off a ton of possible airflow. and the only prob with the corrigated pipe after the filter is turbulence if you remove the MAF screen. Removing the MAF screen and putting a fullsize smooth pipe all the way out can improve your performance (AND sound) I hope to reduce the turbulence prob a ton with my CAI/ram air setup, but that will be a later story...

For example, the later model years produced more power with a larger TB and SC. But from what I read here, the airbox became more restrictive. Therefore I conclude that the airbox is not the limiting factor.
