Default Upgrade questions (valvetrain, pcm related)

So I've ported the LIM, I've drilled/gutted the stock airbox and threw in a K&N drop in filter. The next mod will be actually installing my flowmaster 80 & magnaflow cat. After that, I plan on going to autozone sometime and constructing a rice pipe w/ K&N 4750 and heat shield. Then... Intense PCM. Ok, so I have that laid out, but what to do after all of that?

I'm thinking valvetrain. I just recently actually started thinking about it and understanding how it could benefit, because that always dumbfounded me before. Then I realized, oh yeah, that would probably increase valve clearance, resulting in more air flow, something that engines like.

So if I were to upgrade stuff valvetrain side of the motor, would I really benefit? I'm tired of not being able to really pass people between 40-50 MPH. I wait until I'm up to 55 MPH, then really gas it to get around them. I'm talking about those annoying people that get on the highway, run the ramp @ 40 mph the whole way onto the highway, then take a mile to get up to highway speed (60 mph for them) once already entered on the highway. I'm in a community full of older retired people, so that happens quite a bit. Not that I want to be an aggressive driver, but more like a driver with the power to get in the fast lane and increase my speed to 65-75 from 40 mph so people in the fast lane won't have to brake.

Is it expensive? Is it something I could do myself? I've done many intakes, but I've really not gone beyond changing the valve cover gaskets. I'd like to cam it, but meh, I KNOW that'* expensive and can get complicated. I'd rather have an ssei and do that.

This may not happen until like mid-late 08', but it'* something I'd like to do. I'm addicted!

As far as the PCM goes, what should I order? Stock WOT timing? I would imagine, being that it'* N/A. I am going to do the 6,000 RPM shift points for sure.

I think this is all spawning off the video I saw after jr's3800 ported his LIM lol. I want that...

The muffler won't gain you any performance, but you may improve from the cat - especially if you threw on some higher ratio rockers. I don't have any personal experience, but NA people seem to like the ER rockers. Search on those if you haven't already. Be prepared to spend a few hundred bucks for rockers. Get a 180* T-stat if you don't have one yet. For the PCM, an Intense unit with the 6000 shift points would work well with a high flow cat and rockers. I don't think I'd bump timing though. I've heard it works better for boosted cars. I tried it on my '97 L36 using 93 octane and can't say I noticed much if any improvement.

Taking a step back though, it sounds like your car might not be in top shape to begin with if you're having trouble passing people. My stock car passed anyone quite well. Have you done the basics including plugs and wires?

Yep... full tune up. I can pass... just not as quickly some everyday cars can. Then again... I've been driving w/ a 2.86 geared trans being run by a 3.06 pcm lol. But thats being fixed right now. I know the muffler won't do anything... but I dig the sound.

After my tranny build, I cut about 1.5 seconds off my 40-70mph WOT times. I have some home-done modifications to the runners in my UIM and felt a noticable difference at 4000+ RPM. All my engine mods were done at the same time so I cant tell you what made the most difference. But I did swap a stock UIM back on and ended up putting my modified UIM back on because it was much more responsive

I cut about a 1.5" square section out of each runner and cleaned up the excess material around the edges. It pulls much harder in the higher RPM. And there was definately no loss of low end. Best part about it, FREE. Well, you may want to replace the injector o-rings and UIM gasket if they are old. I have some pictures and videos on my cellphone, but no way to transfer to my PC or email. I can send them via video messenging to you if you can figure out how to post them.
