Header Wrap
 

Has anyone here used header wrap? It's a product that comes in a roll and you use it to wrap around your exhaust headers to trap the heat in the pipe so it cannot dissipate into your engine compartment. The reason I ask is because on my engine the crossover pipe goes directly over my transmission and under the throttle body. The gap between the throttle body and the crossover pipe is less than 2". The entire intake gets HOT because of this. I'm surprised the rubber and plastic components don't melt because they get so hot that you cannot even touch them after only a few miles of driving.

In most cases, do the headers have to be removed to do something like this? If so, I have no idea how to do that. ;)

I just got done doing this yesterday actually. I ported a set of series 2 manifolds, heat coated them, heat wraped them with 1" heat wrap, and then sprayed them with sealer to help protect the heat wrap. It helps a lot, i can touch the bottom of the throttle body and not burn my hand. Its pretty straight forward, just a little time consuming. Let me know if you need any help.

awesome! Did you notice any performance gains by doing this? Also, what products did you use to protect the header wrap? I didn't realize you needed to do that.

I don't know much about exhaust systems because I've never worked with them. Is the gasket reusable & bolts? My dad's telling me it'd just be a waste of time and money to do something like that because "if it actually helped don't you think companies would do it before selling the car." yeah.. he doesn't believe in modding cars in anyway. :roll:

As far as header wrap is concerned, I won't touch the stuff. Too much danger of ruining your headers/manifolds. I've already experienced cracking with mine, so I won't risk them further.

Ceramic or Jet Hot coating is a safer alternative.

On a straight piece of pipe, like the crossover pipe is, there is little risk of heat cracking due to thermal stresses.
I would recommend insulating both the crossover and the throttle intake leading into the throttle body.
Ceramic coating is a better but more elaborate way of reducing temp transmission and radiation.

ok. Instead of doing all the headers would it be good to atleast do the crossover pipe. I'm talking atleast 1-2 foot of it where it passes under the throttle body. You can see how close that crossover is to my TB in this picture. It doesn't look so close because of the camera angle, but, the distance between the TB and that black heatsheild is about 1/4" .

I have 2 crossover pipe heatshields on the 93. Nothing on the 95 yet.

Well its a project that i started a few weeks back and im not absolutely sure about the performance gains yet. I used dei heat wrap and dei sealer along with the dei stainless zip ties. Your stock bolts are reusable but you will need to get new gaskets if you unbolt the manifolds from the heads. The stuff definately cuts down the underhood temps and the throttle body is much cooler than it was with the stock heat shielding. I will try and get some pics this weekend along with unveiling my project and thus updating my sig ;)
