gutted my airbox

took out both inserts, and cut the hole in the front a bit biggger, although i didnt do anything to the sheet metal in front of the hole or anything. i'm still waiting on my Amsoil EAA filter, but i'm about to take it out and see how she sounds. its about 20* F out, so it should be sweet :D

Nice job... let's see some pics... gutted my box and that was by far my favorite mod so far.

Bonnevillan 12-03-2007 03:35 PM

well, i didn't take any pics during the mod, but i used a chisel and rubber mallet to get the tabs off, then a little handheld hacksaw type thing to open up the front more

i can show you this though

i actually looked at that before i started to get an idea of what it would look like. great guide! thanks. one question though, what was the purpose of that weather striping?

i just got my K&N filter (thanks LakevillSSEi) and it definitely sounds better at high RPMS, also little different when i first start up the engine.

My thinking was that if air is forced from around the headlight are into the box, the stripping would keep some of it from "Bleeding" out the side. I don't think that is the case, especially since the size of the box inlet does not match up on the inboard side of that hole in the radiator support. Waste of time and money I think. By the way, if you haven't read about this before, when you cold start your car, it will be quite noisey for a minute or so. One member described it as sounding like a vacuum cleaner. You'll know why GM put the baffles in there! ;)

I bought my 99 SLE with an already gutted airbox, so I'm not aware of the sound difference. Be that as it may, welcome to the gutted airbox club!
