Exhaust Overkill
 
I recently finished a custom CAI on my car removed the MAF screen and decided to custom my own dual exhaust. It doesn't look too bad except teh welds are a little sloppy and i gotta fix 1 exhaust leak by the rear manifold. I can't really tell if there was a big performance gain but i do feel a little and the two dynomax mufflers sound pretty good but a little annoying without the music on. Any opinions do you think dual 2 1/4" exhaust was too much. And i know this is a popular question but 94 bonneville, CHIP? I want one but can't seem to find one that people like. :roll:

As far as your exhaust is concerned, you probably just killed some low-end torque. That's way too open for your car. Even the SC models don't benefit from that. Staying 2.5" and using a performance cat and muffler would be best.

The chip is a good bag of worms. Jet stopped making the best chip for you, but they still make them for the SSEi. Your options are down to fastchip, superchips, and hypertech.

Bummer. Turtle has the Jet Stage 2 like I have, in a 92 SSE with a Series 2 motor. He loves it almost as much as I love mine. It's possible you may find one used or old stock somewhere. I'd look around ebay. DON'T fall for the cheapo fake chips. Stick with the names I listed above.

sounds like i littel too much flow, you will lose some low end torque. one thing you defintly need to do is add a crossover pipe(balance tube between the pipes before the mufflers). if you can X it , that would be better. you will balance the exhaust pulses plus it will sound as if you had 6 cyl. out of each pipe.

Did you do true dual exhaust where the front and back have their own exhaust tubes and routing? Or did you split it into two pipes from the cat?

It is a true dual exhaust I ordered another rear manifold and modified it so that i could have 1 pipe coming from the rear and one from the front maniofld. had to use flex pipe to avoid the suspension and trans lines etc :( , but i think custom piping there would have been expensive. I did not use an X pipe i used an H pipe to balance the pressures and both pipes to the rear had to run straight under the gas tank so it cut my ground clearance some. It was mostly a project i wanted to do myself for the sake of doing it and i didn't want to spend a fortune I graduate in less then a year and hopefully with in the next few years its the GTO although it looks like a regular family car just more power and my girlfriend might like it better. for me they should actually make some good "professional" bolt ons for that, unlike my current custom stuff. It was fun though and now my Bonnie is a little more unique. :o
