Well, this last Wednesday when I was up at Brainerd International Speedway talked to a guy who had a SII supercharged 3800 in his 1988 Fiero GT. He had the ZZP intercooler on it and he was running 12.4'* and he still was no where near his potential.
He said he really hadn't gotten it tuned and was having some ground problems, so he really wasn't sure how much the cooler had helped.
Anyhow, you can't lose, that'* for sure.
I've put intercoolers on turbo cars and there has NEVER been any negative effects.
BTW, I ran a measly 16.71 @ 80. The fuel pump was not pumping and the car was bogging so bad the whole way I let off with about 300 feet to go and was on the brakes the last 50 feet.
My 1/8th was 10.679 @65 with the car stripped down (no back seat, no trunk spoiler, removed a bounch of interior trim), and I was running 103 octane VP Race Gas and a few more mods, way down from my previous best of 10.14 @ 73, which was done on 93 octane pump gas, and a fully loaded car.
I am getting a new pump and tank this week and will go back on Sept. 24th.

Because ZZP Advertises based on there end time slips it can be hard to tell what you’re going to get out of the system. I have talked to quite a few people about these systems and if you have modified the rest of your engine for more performance it will definitely help keep it cooler.

I have also have encountered many "opinions' of top mechanics who have had the unit in there hands and the opinion was not glowing.

So take it all with a grain of salt and I figure it will probably help keep it cooler in a stock format but I don’t think it will actually add performance but preserve it as you add mods gaining more hp.

The ZZP Intercooler is AWESOME!!! If you are considering it, I see no reason for you to decide not to get it. Typical gains are .4 seconds in the 1/4 assuming the same conditions. It allows you to run a much smaller pulley for more boost, without a smaller pulley though it isn't going to help you much if at all. In our GTP we went from running a 3.25" Pulley (~11psi) with 2kr before the intercooler to running a 2.7" Pulley (14.3psi) with 0kr on the street on pump gas and a 2.6" pulley (14.96psi) with 0kr on race gas and 3kr on pump gas, and we will be testing the 2.45" pulley (~16psi) at the track shortly, it should hopefully get very little if any KR with that pulley. And those pulley numbers may not tell you anything, but going from a 3.8" pulley (stock) to a 3.4" pulley usually gives gains of 25-30hp and 50lb.ft. of torque if that tells you anything.

You don't need any mods at all to install it on your car (except for a smaller pulley which is the whole point of the intercooler), but the more mods you have the more it is going to help. The fastest non-intercooled M90'ed GTP to date that I know of ran a 12.4XX (no nitrous) and it has a complete intense race engine, whereas the fastest intercooled M90'ed GTP to date has run an 11.780 (no nitrous) on the stock short block (with the obvious cam and ported heads and such). I'm not trying to sell any intercoolers here, because it doesn't benefit me in any way shape or form, but if you want a lot of performance out of your car, you can't lose with the ZZP Intercooler IMHO.

how long did it take you to install the intercooler? I am planning on doing this in my 98 SSEI this spring along with headers.

The installation took us a good 10-12 hours, but that is including breaks that we took. We set aside a whole weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and worked on it about 8 hours on Saturday and finished it up Sunday Morning, and we also installed a few other mods at the time. We took our time and didn't rush at all. But if you set aside 2 days to do it, it should be plenty of time.

I think the ZZP units are probably good units I don’t think they are "bad" I am only a store but I do my research and their product is currently the only intercooler for the roots sc. I don’t think you really have an option unless you have a custom product made.

I would still like to see separate product dyno without and with other product added.

Not an attack on the product but a serious amount of money is spent and markup is great so I personally would want a dyno breakdown to be sure. I have also noticed this with ported throttle bodies. If i am asked I will supply variables or appropriate numbers I am interested in the numbers of this product...well and many of the others on the 3.8 market. You rarely see them these days.

Maybe you should do some better research. Thrasher has had an intercooler available for these cars since before ZZP was even around. The price is ~$2400 for that one, and it isn't any better than the ZZP. It is available at 3800performance.com IIRC. There is also another IC being released shortly (like within the next month), and ZZP will also be releasing their Generation 2 IC shortly. A few custom Intercoolers have also been made that have worked well also.

I'm holding out for the zzp 2nd gen intercooler. hey dbkt2, didn't you say before that there are 2 options with the zzp ic? one being the machined intake manifold matched to the IC shape and can't remember what you said the second option was. Each was an extra $100, I believe.

Might get the IC installed when rockers go in.
