Default WCBF '04, Greenzilla at the track (with slips)

Track day started out kinda rough. Hot. Running late. We picked up Jseabert at home, he rode back seat in Zilla, and lilpooky had shotgun.
We hit I-5 for Woodburn with 2000SilverBullet, Driverjohn2005, and PontiacDad/PontiacMom in tow (including families).
5 miles north of Albany, Greenzilla popped an SES light.
Jseabert dug into the trunk for my Actron Scantool, lilpooky
hooked it up, and we pulled an EGR solonoid #3 error. Held the
error all the way to the track, and fixed it there.

Transmission was running 240°F when we pulled in (partly due to the 90° day),
and we began prepping the cars. Tricking ELC, and deflating tires.
I left all the junk in the trunk, deflated to 28psi in the front, and headed to
tech inspection with driverjohn carrying over 1/2 a tank of gas. ****-poor
planning.

Tech took too long and we had to guess our dial-in. I guessed 15.5 based on
track temps and hot transmission, not to mention running full street trim.
John guessed 17.5, and I slapped him for his ignorance 2000SilverBullet
dialed in at 14.7, and PontiacDad dialed in at 15.0 (they actually got to dial
in because they got out of tech early).

The Bullet and Bone-Evil in tech inspection before dial-in runs:


John and I lined up together for the first run, with track temps probably around
100°F. Him in the left, me in the right. Having NO concept of what the hell we
were doing, we did our burnouts without getting wet (quite nice burnouts for old
dogs, I might add), and promptly tried to stage too far forward. After
being corrected, we staged. Two ignoramouses in old cars. My tree had just
started to fall through the yellows when John took off. I had no clue he was
given a head start due to the slower dial-in painted on his windows, and figured
he red-lighted. I got antsy, not wanting to be trounced by a 92SSEi, and
promptly red-lighted myself with a -.375 R/T. Nevertheless, I ran him down
and beat him by 2 lengths, turning in a 15.552 to his 16.666. Pretty close
to my 'guessed' dialin. This was also my best 60' of the day, and possibly the
best overall of all 4 cars. Not sure about that one though.

John and I staging:


That run cost me an accessory belt (wrong pulley was shipped on a
warrantied alternator 2 days earlier, shredded the gatorback), so I had to change
it with John'* help in the staging lanes before the second run. On a hot engine.
With sharp parts.


After the belt change, a band-aid from the Bullet, and borrowed electrical tape for
the sweaty hand from a GTP owner, we lined up again, only this time Pdad
weaseled his way alongside Zilla. We laughed at each other and staged. He pulled
a 14.812 to my 16.546. I lost a whole second, only guessing trans temp as a
killer here. None of us were icing superchargers for any runs (didn't bring any).

First two slips:


This time, having learned my heat lesson, I entered the staging lanes with the
hood open, had the fan override running constantly, and occasionally started the
car for 5-10 seconds to circulate the coolant through the radiator. I lined with
john again, waving a 19-second civic around john to run with his buddy in the
22 second civic, leaving john and I going head-to-head. John pulled a 16.7 this
run, and I pulled a 15.6.

All 4 cars in the staging lanes:


The last run, I had to have with the SilverBullet. I didn't want to leave the
track without running all the other cars. Paul carried BuckWheat (Victor)
shotgun, but lilpooky got booted from my car for not having a release signed
(they overlooked Victor, or didn't see him). I asked Paul to promptly return my
*** after the run, and he obliged. He turned in a 14.7 that run, to my
16.7......no extra cooling care this time, obviously. I console myself with my
.151 R/T on this run, the best of the day for us. Paul was close with a .157 R/T.

Slips 3 and 4:


The good news is that I didn't frag the differential as I expected, but the
temperature, weight, and slipping trans cost me dearly. John and I may go back
and meet the Portland GP chapter at Woodburn again soon. But I think we'll wait
for better weather Oh...and bring a few bags of ice.

so the cooling you tried didnt help much? Did you have the cabin heater running? I bet those bags of ice will help out alot.

I'm convinced that if I spent the time to do it right, and did it on the right day, I'd be in the high 14'*. I intend to prove it in the fall

14'* are VERY achievable with simple bolt-on mods on a Series 1 L67. VERY.

And I'm sure it did with 90* temps and 80% humidity! Those are some of the worst test conditions I have ever seen. Drop that down to about 60* with ~20% humidity and it would be in the high 15'* IMO.

I agree completely. That'* why I know I can get into the 14'* without modding the car at all any more. Our humidity was 50%, temps sucked, and we all had too much weight in the back....gas, junk in the trunk, spare, and jack. I could have easily peeled off 3-400 pounds. Then knock that air temperature down 30° and actually take the time to cool the car between runs, and ice the blower?

I can hit 14'* without turning the water injection back on. I've done it before with the Gtech, I just don't know how far off that 14.7 was from reality, but that was at 60° ambient.
