getting a cone filter that fits the size of the trottle body inlet and just put the filter on it. leaving the tubing and crap off it. then maybe laying insulation over the exhuast that goes over the tranmission. would this work or no?

That would be good for air flow but not for heat. You would need to build some sorta box and duct it with cool fresh air. I dont thnk there is room for a box in this location and is why the tube is needed?

If I understand correctly, you're basically making a cold air intake without the piping.

If that'* the case, there'* no point. All you'll be doing is sucking really hot air out of the engine. That will probably hinder your performance more than help it.

The idea behind a CAI is to pull cold air from the front underside of the car, before it has a chance to get heated by the engine.

Some Vibe owners have installed short rams, and then run a secondary hose from the front grille to the short ram.

Kind of accomplishes the same thing, but I think it isn't nearly as good as a full CAI would be.

But I think a CAI looks, and performs, better.

Just MHO.

You need a long enough tube to gain laminar flow to be of any performance benefit, especially on a car without a supercharger.

to me going down the road at any speed is going to be throwing fresh air over that motor. i dont think any type of HOT air is going to get in but i' dunno alright well that being the case. have a ram air hood with the duct ending right on top of the air filter then build a box around the cone filter now all u have is cold air going into the motor what bout this setup? the reason i was thinking bout this is cuase like the tpi'* lt1 and ls1'* when they get street rodded they just run a filter on the throttle body. i was just thinking moose

ps where did my grin go on the emoticons?

This may explain a little to you:

That'* a great page for reference. This is the same type of testing Hector did with the ADTR intake. Notice how poorly the TB flows? That means that increasing the diameter of the pipe won't really gain you anything in the intake plenum. The idea at this point is to decrease the pipe diameter to closer to the flow of the TB, thereby forcing the air to be more laminar, without the flow disruption as it enters the 'restriction' of the TB.

I'm in the process of putting all this info together for the purposes of making intakes. Much more information is in the works on this, including pictures and drawings.

Ok, I'm slow.

What'* TB? Besides tuberculosis of course...
