Exhaust question - high flow convertor?
I am wanting to do a little modification on my '00 SSEi. I am thinking about wanting to do something with the sound. I was thinking of a downpipe with a high flow convertor. I don't have any mods to support a 3" downpipe so have decided against it, and am considering just doing the high-flow. Does anyone know what size the pipe is going in and out of the factory convertor? Will a 2.5" or 3" be the better choice? Will a high-flow convertor change the sound of the car?
Upon doing a convertor, I don't want to mess with mufflers so I was thinking about removing the resonator as well. Is a high-flow and a resonator delete a good combination?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I picked up one of these on a Best Offer auction for $50 and free shipping last summer for the '03 SSEi -- Magnaflow 2.5" Hi Flow Univ Catalytic Converter 94006
I had an exhaust shop weld it in and have had no problems with it at all. It did change the sound for sure also. Stock you could hardly hear anything, now there is a nice little growl. Not loud, but you know it is there

Crash is right on with the Converter to go with, i run one as well but the 3" version to go with my 3" DP. Made my exhaust tone deeper for sure. Oddly enough i got the biggest sound change with exhaust tips. When i went to dual/dual tips i got a lot more noise out of the exhaust then when i added the 3" DP and cat.
Resonator delete is a matter of personal opinion. I have heard some GTP'* in person that have the resonator deleted and at idle i think they sound mean as hell. Once they get on the throttle though it'* kinda raspy and nasty sounding, not to mention the popping sound when they let off the throttle.

With full stock exhaust, except maybe adding that hi-flow, will deleting the resonator effect it that much, causing it cackle and pop and sound bad? I did pick up a set of SLP dual-dual tips that I was thinking about installing as well eventually.

Another question, have we determined that 2.5" is the way to go with a stock car? That 94006 looks like a good one to go with and very affordable.....especially since I'll be able to fully recover that upon scraping my good original convertor.

Without a resonator, nearly every performance muffler will cause raspy crackle pop. And the resonator isn't a restriction. Keep the resonator unless you're in an annoying noise contest with the ricers in your area.

2.5" the best size to go with? I was thinking the exhaust was almost 2.75" O.D. between convertor & resonator. That'* why I ask. I know 3 " maybe be overkill, since the downpipe and everything else will be stock.
I don't like the way the mufflers lay on these cars and it make it difficult to change tips. I was thinking about picking up some oe replacement style, comfort quiet style of universal mufflers at Advanced Auto or somewhere. I like the sound of the 3.8 with Magnaflow mufflers, but I don't want the car being that loud and obnoxious, hence the reason I want the quietest mufflers possible. One muffler appears to be starting to maybe rust away, so that'* really the only reason I would want to replace them.
