Default Check Gauge Light with Open Air Intake

Ok, so I decided to do a little playing around today and headed out to True Value and bought some stuff for a Open Air Intake. I bought two rubber couplers (1 to fit over the TB and one to attach to the PVC tube), a 60 degree PVC bend tube, and a cheap air filter from auto zone to just test it out. I drilled a hole in the PVC tube for my sensor then stuck it in there, then I attached everything to the engine and put the filter on at the end of it. Took it for a test drive. The first drive was about 10 minutes long around my neighborhood and everything went fine. The second test drive I got about 4 minutes away and a check engine lite came on so I headed back on home. Messed around with it at home, then drove around, including taking it on the Interstate to see if I could just blow something out but the lite stayed on. The car never backfired, even when it was floored or when I slowed down real fast. From what I have said so far, does anyone know what I can do to get rid of the Check engine lite? I was thinking it was the cheap filter but you know the stock tubing that comes with the car, I slapped it on the end of that and drove around and the lite never came on. So could it be the sensor, because I have it plugged into the tube, but it is exposed to the air in there directly. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I have been at it all day. Yes, the diamater of everything is 3" and everything was sealed up tightly with clamps.

I would guess you left your IAT disconnected. That will set an SES light and code.

I put the sensor back into the PVC pipe. I drilled a little hole in it. I am pretty much stumped. The car drives fine and everything. Maybe it will go away tonight...

The best bet at this point is to scan if your SES light doesn't go away. You didn't damage the IAT sensor or wires? Thoroughly inspect it in the daylight.

The other possibility is a fried MAF sensor. If your filter was over-oiled, this could have happened.

I am pretty sure I did not damage anything. The Maf screen, well that is kinda beat up badly. When I removed everything today I noticed the screen is bent in the middle and there is a lot of crud on it. Could that be my problem? In my stock filter box I did have a K&N filter. I will probably check all that out tommarow. The maf screen is easy to remove, right? Probably just check the tech articles. Thanks!

Remove the circular clip around the screen very gently with a small screwdriver and needlenose. It'* not the screen I'd worry about, but the sensor behind it. However, with 'crud' on the screen and a bend, you have other problems. Restricted airflow being the most obvious.

Ok, I think I am just going to remove the screen altogether and go from there. The light never came on before until I started to modify it today. Could that little bend (more like a indent) cause problems for this type of setup or with it being a cheap cone filter could that cause some problems?

Nothing you did as far as the pipe and filter are concerned could have caused this. It has to be sensor related. And almost certainly the MAF or the IAT. But then again, it could be something totally unrelated to the intake mods.

I've never had a light for the sensor unplugged from the harness, misplaced, or in the direct air, or filter.

Maybe the new ones are more sensitive? I'd say your IAT or MAF are it.
