Another solid axle swap
 

hi everyone im new to this site. i have two gmc trucks a 96 gmc ext cab lifted(daily driver) and a 98 gmc ext cab that i wrecked a while back. now im gettin into all this truck pullling stuff so im gonna try and build my 98 into a pulling truck. i was wondering about doing a solid axle swap on it. ive heard so much on this i dont know whats right from worng. my buddy has some 3/4 ton axles out of an 80's chevy and i was considering putting them in. any information is awesome. thanks guys. oh btw im a WYOTECH student in chassis fab right now so this is another reason i was thinking of doin it:)

not sure how much good would come from a solid axle swap on a pulling truck. since the weight would be centered over the rear axle. I guess you wouldnt get as much chamber change...

yea wyotech ha its somethin else but im not worried about weight really cause i can always change that later its just the fact of f its worth it or not

I dont see it being a big advantage if ur main objective it hauling. Now if it was a mudder, or off roader where lots of lift would be used and a need for lots of articulation then yes Solid Axle all the way.

Check the rules in the sanctioning body and go from there
I'm pretty sure tho solid axle is the way to go, look for a Dana 60 ;)

ha yea thats what im talkin bout and i think im gonna try to find a spring kit and a transfer case and build the shackles in my class. i just gotta find out which t case is the best

O I C! LOL... i starting thinking he was talking about that kind of pulling after i posted that last post. Yea solid axle would be better. You can get dana 60's dirt cheap as X mentioned. But dana 80's arent to hard to find either.
But u cant beat the Rockwell's! But im not sure how much you can change the gear ratio's in them. Rockwells are everywhere! Just gotta know where to look.

yea i got a buddy with some 3/4tons that are built up that he will sell me cheap i just gotta change the t case and get springs and figure out the steering

New Process 205 (NP205) is considered one of the best transfer cases that came in the 73-87 truck with passenger side drop and manual shift level. It's a part-time 4x4 transfer case, iron case, and is gear driven(not chain driven). NP205 that was used on 350 Turbo and 700R4 transmission had 27 splines and NP205 used on 400 Turbo and some SM465 had 32 splines.

Bonus points; 4l60e had 27 splines and 4l80e had 32 splines.

Depending on the amount of lift on your truck you might want to invest in crossover steering.
